Loving my RYTM, incredible machine.

Was getting pretty heavy with the compressor - as I am want to do - I really like to use compressors with drum machines for fairly extreme pumping / creative ‘breathing’ type effects & I’m loving the RYTMs compressor.

I found I was using a lot of gain make-up as I was comp’ing heavily & as other people have mentioned you then get a pretty high noise-floor : tbh this is not a problem when the pattern was running ( & I don’t mind a bit of noise) but it was pretty extreme on hitting stop, which started to be an annoyance when working on other sounds / synths etc. Now this level of noise is to be expected given how I was using the comp, but I got to thinking a simple noise gate would be nice for when I hit ‘stop’.
Then I remember my trusty Machinedrum :run the RYTM into the A/B ins & use an input machine with a simple gate - all good.

But here’s the thing : what I hadn’t expected is how much better the RYTM sounds going through the MD’s AD/DA conversion! Amazing - much smoother & rounder sounding… I also love the MD’s compressor ( I know a lot of people don’t, but since they bug-fixed it a while back it’s fantastic I think ) so a bit of MD compression on top & the whole thing just sounds totally tight & more ‘under control’. I also used some MD EQ from the FX section too.

I know many of you are going to be horrified that I’m putting an analogue machine through AD/DA convertors but trust me… it sounds fantastic. The raw goodness of the RYTM gets that lovely Machinedrum ‘sheen’ on top…try it.

sounds like you’ve just discovered the joys of sampling… for adding color… it isn’t sacrilegious at all imo, i love running my analog gear (808/909/303 etc) through my digital samplers for sound processing… the older the better imo and MDUW’s crusty 12-bit sampling is perfect for that

Is it possible to post some before/after sound examples? A lot of people don’t like routing audio through the OT because of degraded sound quality, does the MD have different character?

imo you can never have too many compressors. and you were going to record onto something other than tape anyway right?

have you tried using one of the multi outs on the md to trigger the side chain on the rytm too? one way i like to use the md is to run the bpm at a multiple of what’s going in it, sometimes faster or slower, especially if i’m mostly using it for effects, samples and midi automation. i often like the feel i get around 33%

this is a subjective field… some people actually like to degrade/crunch/lo-fi a signal… other like to keep things Hi-def/pristine… but to answer you’re question, yes the MD & OT have very different characters, first of all the sampling format itself: MDUW is 12-bit mono, OT is 24-bit stereo (that’s double the resolution!) but i’d be ready to bet the converters & signal path is probably quite different as well since almost a decade separates both units… as for my personal opinion, OT does sound kind of flat whereas MD has very specific dynamics, hard to put into words though…

I am sampling and running the analog keys ino the MDUW mainly for a4 drum sampling action
just sounds amazing, really surprised as my old Juno don’t sound that great in the md
sampling analog keys on the fly in the UW just sound light yrs better than stock anlog samples

You can do some pretty interesting things with the INP A/B machines… I’ve used KD triggered LFO’s to control the volume of INP machines to create a fake pump/breath/ducking effect. Using LFOs on the AMF can yield interesting trippy results as well. Some have complained that the INP machines on the MD degrade the sound… and this might be true… but it works for what I want You also have, at your disposal, the master effect section… which has also been bashed, but I like the Reverb/Delay of the MD. I haven’t gelled with the MD COMP yet… but I haven’t given up on it.
