I do, frequently.

Tempest mostly for synth and bass, Rytm for loops, sampled one shots and drums - in fact, I’ve made a few drum kits in the Tempest and then sampled them for use in the Rytm.

Yeah, when you look at it that way, they’re kind of a dream team, imo. I’ve been thinking about going through and sampling all of the synth patches I’ve made on the Tempest to use in the AR, in fact. I just wonder how close I am to using up that 1GB of storage space!

I found that the Tempest synth patches don’t translate as well to the Rytm. Drums are just fine, great even, but the synth sections, not so much.
There’s too much going on in the Tempest that it loses a lot when you sample the more delicate expressive parts. I just missed all those little nuances too much. Loops, though, are better, since then you get a longer slice of all those subtle variations.

I considered it, I was very impressed with Tempest as a synthesizer. However, the 16 pattern project limit on Tempest quickly turned me off (even if the patterns are 8 bars long). I suppose for studio work only it would suffice, but I write for the stage as well, and have grown accustomed to Elektron’s 128 patterns per project framework.

I eventually found Rytm accompaniment by way of A4 +Nord Drum 1 instead of Tempest. It feels like I am getting far, far more for less money with A4+ND1. On the A4… more filter types, FX, sound locks, ext inputs, macros (performance mode), and 4x the amount of unique measures in a project.
I only really feel like it is losing out to Tempest on the lack of individual outputs. But thanks to A4’s various filter types, I can get a good mix to go out of the stereo outputs anyway.

The size of the Tempest also disappointed me a little. A bit too big for my liking. That and the Prophet 12 really do not need to be so wide and long, but I am admittedly too picky about portability.

I sold my RYTM for a Tempest and am very glad I did. The Tempest is fun to create sounds with and it has a more aggressive up-front sound. The RYTM was very boring for me, and I never used it. I also felt it sounded a bit flat. I keep checking back to see if any OS updates might have been released to sway me into buying one again, but there hasn’t been one.

I’m interested in pairing an Elektron box with the Tempest, and I’m really close to ordering an Octatrack. I’m just a bit hesitant regarding the sound quality of the convertors and effects, I keep listening to demos to make sure it’ll sound the way I want. I’m counting on the dark reverb and compressor to be quality.

For now, I decided to order an Electribe 2 along with a Focusrite Compounder to tide me over.

I have to say, I am a little surprised that someone would consider the Tempest to be too large, physically. But I guess, when you put it next to an Elektron box, it is quite a bit bigger. But when I had it next to my MC-909 it was downright tiny. heh

I’ve been using it mostly as a synth so I can definitely see something like the A4 taking it’s place, especially when you really need every inch of real estate to count, as in a live setting.

Is that your video? If so, I have to say, your vids were a big factor in me deciding to ditch a pile of lower end gear and grab a Tempest.
I’ve been contemplating an Octatrack more and more but currently using an SP-808 to join the AR and Tempest together. It’s cool to see it used in exactly the context I would be using it in. Nice vid!

Tempest isnt perfect but it complements the AR very well. Especially when it comes to HiHats and Snates. AR´s weak points in my opinion.

I’ve been contemplating getting a RYTM again to pair with my Tempest. Quick question; is the Tempest’s output loud enough to run into the RYTM’s audio in without the need for a preamp? How does the Tempest sound this way, with its compressor going as the RYTM’s compressor is going as well? The Tempest’s distortion has a way of removing bass frequency from its mix; has anyone used this effect to balance the two instruments as they mixed them together?

Personally, it always comes down to lowering the track volumes on the Rytm to around 90 or so to start with and then I have a little bit of headroom where I can bump up volume a little if I need to for a certain track or two. Then I set the Tempest’s volume pretty high (just over 3/4, I’d say) and I almost never use the Tempest’s distortion or compressor. With things set up in this way, I’ve gotten decent results.

I’m also curious to see if anyone else has input on this.

I’ve found that the Tempest’s output is just fine for plugging directly into the Rytm, which can’t be said for all instruments. The Electribe2 struggles with this, as does the Volcas (obviously) and so on.
The Tempest, however, is more sensitive to volume control than many other instruments. Take it down too much, and it loses a lot of the details in the modulations. Pick it up, and it can get too loud and just eat up space in the mix. In general, it’s a hard instrument to tame, and I don’t think it just comes down to skill. Compared to Elektron’s instruments, it’s not all that balanced in what it puts out, thus the individual outs where you have more control over each voice. So this is always a bit of a challenge when using it in the Rytm’s input, which is weak to begin with. But the sweet spot is there without compromising too much on the Rytm’s internal track volumes, as opposed to using for example a Volca Sample, which is almost hopeless without some kind of amplifier in between.

Anyway, once the Tempest is in the Rytm and you got your levels sorted, it works quite well together with the Rytm. I don’t much use the Tempest compression when I plug it into the Rytm, since the Rytm’s is just better (in my ears, at least), but I frequently use the Tempest dist. It’s raw, crude and gives the sound a very unique flavour.
