I got the AR for a few days only and I’m loving it so far ! The synthesis is powerful and I still haven’t play with samples yet. One thing I am now wondering is how do people use it in a live act situation ? How to smoothly change pattern ?
Changing from pattern A to B at the end of the bar seems a bit brutal and kind of kill the groove… I’m use to play with Ableton Live where I have 8 tracks for drums. When I want to change to another song I slowly bring some elements and remove some from the previous track. Is there any way I could get a similar workflow on the Rytm ? Maybe Scenes or Performance Macro ?
I’m thinking now about two solutions:
A / As I’m using Ableton in live situation anyway I could record a one bar loop of the sound coming from the AR and EQ / filter it while I bring the new pattern on the AR.
B / Sequence all 12 AR channels with midi coming from Ableton… That way I could blend different patterns together but I’m loosing the greatness of P-locks on the machine…
Both are not ideal.
Am I missing something obvious here ?
You can create transitional patterns that have elemtns of both patterns? combining one or more transitional pattns with performanve macros and mutes should allow for more subtle transitions.
Yes I thought about that aswell problem is that I usually don’t plan in advance in which particular order the songs are going to be played. That would mean I need to create “transition pattern” for every possible combination… That’s quite much work…
You need to prepare/think ahead, that with proper use of scenes/mutes/perf will get you a good amount of the way. I suggest watching some videos of people who are good at jamming Elektron boxes (not just Rytm) to get a good idea. Dataline’s vids are a good place to start!
(Edit: you might want to watch Cenk’s stuff at 0.5x speed :p)
I’ve watch some of Cenk’s video already… Looks to me he is always balancing between different machines to get a “fuller” sound. I only have the rytm in my case (for the rythmic part)…
But I guess you’re right I should just think ahead the order I want to play my songs and prepare some transitional patterns…
I’m still not very familiar with scenes. In what case would you want to use that ?
I’ve got a lil faderfox midi controller box with sliders n buttons which I’m gonna use with my DT for fade outs n mutes n stuff. gonna make for some more natural transitions. Worth a thought
Nice ! I’ve hooked up an APC40 to the Rytm (through overbridge) to control : track levels / mutes / solo / delay send / reverb send / pattern changes. It’s pretty dope. Planning on using my Push aswell for more control…
i mute loud stuff, something that stands out. usually it works fine.
also you can make a scene or performance macro with increased delay or reverb on some sounds, so a tail from it will stay on a new pattern.
also you can use a beatrepeater on ableton, if you use them together anyway. so just loop some beats from rytm, filter them while muting on rytm and changing pattern. should be easy
I used to sample the last bar and wiggle with fx on the fly with a kaosspad to handle unplanned transition in live sets. I’m now doing the same with flux:fx on an iPad, more options/flexibility but it’s pretty much the same concept. You could easily do the same using ableton and some controller if you plan on keeping a laptop in your rig.
Otherwise, if you want to go Rytm only with no planning ahead, a mix of mute/perf macro to create drastic drops and or tension rise and then switch to the next pattern is pretty much the most you can do.
Thx for the replies ! As I’m planning on keeping the laptop for now, I’l try to set a up a beatrepeat / looper thing. I think that will work fine for now.
Im new to AR and allt this, I give u an example of my problem ro see if we have the same issue. If I have a kick drum going and just simple change pattern from 1 to 2 when it overlaps I get a heavy tone from the gick before the other kick on pattern 2 kicks in. The same is for hats i get som strange sound when it jumps over to the next pattern. Is this what you are talking about =) ?
