Size of metric screws for 3/4" side panel on AR/Octatrack?

Hi all,

I am a furniture builder who wants to make some nice side panels for my AR and hopefully in the future, an Octatrack and A4.

Being in the US, metric screws aren’t that common, and am wondering what size and length I need for 3/4" or 1/2" panels. Don’t want them too long to possibly damage internals, but just long enough.

Anyone also know a good source for metric screws? What are the proper sizes for each machine?

I plan to use some exotic woods I have in my shop for this. Will post pictures when I complete it.

Thx

I went through this recently, although I was using metric measurements.

Metric: M3 (3mm diameter) x 0.5mm thread pitch
Imperial: #4 (3mm diameter) : 40 (no. of threads per inch)

means you need 4-40 x XX (XX=screw length)

I measured the depth of the MD & MM holes with a tooth pick. Can’t go deeper than 4.5-5mm. i kept with 3-3.5mm depth to be safe.

To convert…
1/2" = 12.7mm + 3mm = 15.7mm length screws
3/4" = 19.05mm + 3mm = 22.05mm length screws required

So for 1/2 inch wood, you need 4-40 x 5/8 (16mm) screws (will fit fine without mod)

& for 3/4 wood, you need 4-40 x 3/4 (20mm) screws with 2mm countersink
or else 4-40 x 1 (25mm) screws with 3mm of washers sticking out of wood.
Countersink definitely the better option I think.

Hope that makes sense.
