Ok so I was able to hook up the OT to the 0-coast and get the two to play well together. I had given up getting CV working with the A4 and 0-coast and since I want to sample/sequence stuff anyways from the 0-coast to the OT, it works better for me to have OT-0coast and then have another chain from the A4-OT.
That works well and I can play the A4 in concert with the OT samples.
Now the kicker is I am for some reason having issues now getting the Volca Beats to work with my OT! The lights come on but no sound plays on the OT from the Volca Beats. I checked mixer and levels and those are fine. In the photo it is not hooked up only the A4 and Nocoast.
Any ideas? Also open to suggestions on how to elegantly manage all these guys from the OT as central brain/controller/sequencer/sampler.
Thank you for the great suggestion. Really loving the combo so powerful and very portable. Now that I have a handle on the basics, the fun factor is finally starting to kick in with my OT! This should keep me happy until I can afford a full blown Eurorack modular setup. My one friend has such a massive setup like the Starship Enterprise.
It’s easier for us to help you if we just start with one situation. Just let us know, and also tell us what physical connections you have made to the OT and the Volca Beats.
Ok let me get this sorted. I just fixed the CV issue with my Analog 4 and 0-coast.
Many thanks to @Unifono for the correct and super helpful walkthru instructions on the A4 with CV setup and 0-coast. I owe you a beer if you ever are in San Diego man!
I guess my goal is something along these lines:
0-coast->-Elektron A4 over CV (done)
A4 - OT over MIDI
Volca beats- OT over MIDI
Also how would I expand the setup to chain more devices to the OT?
I know limit is 8 tracks and 4 connections from the inputs/outputs. Maybe get a mixer?
Ok I tried a new setup and was able to control the Volca Beats from the OT but cannot stop/start playback of the A4 from the OT.
Here is my current signal path
A4 to OT
A4-0coast via CV
A4 using MIDI OUT -> OT MIDI THRU (I also tried MIDI IN on the OT)
Volca to OT
Volca to OT using MIDI IN on Volca -> MIDI OUT on the OT
Questions
Playback can be paused or started from the OT to the Volca just fine and sound is working for all the gears.
BUT I can only start/stop/pause playback from the OT to A4 if I do so directly on the A4 and cannot do so from the OT!
My goal is to use OT as central brain master controller hub for all my gears and be able to sample as well.
How would I hook up additional gear to the OT with MIDI Quadra THRU box which I have that lets me connect and chain 4 devices from MIDI THRU to MIDI In (on the OT) ?
Would I need a mixer to expand and chain synthesizers to the OT? I know there is a limit of 4 connections from the back of the OT but I see videos of guys with dozens of synths managed by one OT. How the heck is this even possible? Do they use multiple sequencers? Here is a video of my setup thus far
I am glad that I got the CV issue sorted with my Analog 4 and 0-coast as this frees up precious port space on the OT! Plus I can even hook up another modular rig to it.
Ok all is good now! I have the Korg Volca, Analog 4, and 0-coast playing together with Octatrack as the brain and workstation controller! I had to change the MIDI ports.
This is what works:
Analog 4- 0coast via CV outputs
Analog 4 MIDI OUT-> MIDI IN on OT
Korg Volca MIDI IN-> MIDI IN on the A4
Works amazing! Here is a cool jam I created just now to test the setup out:
So to expand this to allow more devices to be controlled/managed by the OT, what would I need to do for the setups?
Maybe it’s a typo but if you are trying to control everything with OT you need to come out of the midi out of the OT, how would your OT play your a4 if you are plugged in to the midi in of it like the way you say? You are plugged midi out a4 to midi in OT but then you want to send midi from OT to a4 so that won’t work.
You need to do this
OT midi out —>a4 midi in . Check clock send on OT and clock recieve on a4. Set transport send on OT and transport recieve on a4
And this is just my opinion, no offense or anything but I would just sequence the o coast with the OT over midi, if you turn your pitch knob all the way ccwise it should follow your midi pretty spot on. Then use the a4 to send gate or trig or values to o coast controlling slope or Dynamics or whatever. Don’t forget you can send two midi signals to o coast from OT and patch the second one out of midi b to whatever. I would put the volca beats away and focus on those three things, with those three you have a very powerful dynamic set up
Thanks yeah I wanted to try CV for the 0 coast using the A4 to get some understanding on how to control modular type gear with the Elektron. That way I don’t have to buy another controller for Eurorack. I did test out controlling the 0coast over MIDI with the OT and it works great as well. So many options to handle the gears.
