I need to dust my Sid-Station and hook it back to the MD.
As only a mono- and a poly mode seems to exist, I was wondering:
Is it possible to trigger the three different oscillators via three different Midi-channels to create for example drums , bass and a lead voice in one patch?
(I think this is doable on the Therapsid - but no idea about the SID-Station).
I would imagine that you’d have to create a .sid file to be sent from your computer that can be used by the ASID player in order to address multiple voices individually.
You might ask @ThomasJ or @J3RK about this, they’re both more knowledgeable about playing sid files on external hardware than I am.
It’s been around 22 years since I had mine. I don’t believe you can use it semi-multi-timbrally like that. Just mono and poly.
However, there is the table mode, that you could use to cycle sounds. Not the same thing of course, but depending on what you’re trying to do, could add variety.
I don’t believe you can use the SID Station to say write a full SID tune though if that’s the goal. You could do it in a SID editor, then play it back through the SID Station to get authentic SID sounds, but then you aren’t syncing with other gear if you were trying to do it like that.
@ThomasJ may have more up to date information for you. It’s been a long time since I used one. I mainly used mine for poly sounds, arpeggiated chords, and percussive sounds at the time mixed with my Waldorfs etc. (so never needed more than mono/poly modes)
It’s ok, it’s not something which they made a point of saying straight and that’s frustrating, but this statement confirms it can only receive on the base channel.
Maybe these days you can make a .mid file and convert to .sid? Things have come a long way since some of my C64 experience dates back to so hopefully ThomasJ has some info about writing midi to a .sid file and maybe it can be done.
That would unfortunately remove the fun of using it performatively as a module though so it’s maybe more about whichever is a higher priority for you, using it as an instrument or using it as a 3-part machine, and that’s what you’d need to consider for this one.
As you state above, it’s not as fun so maybe not worth it in this instance.
Yep, as already stated - The Sidstation is mono timbral. The purpose was to use it as a 3-osc synth (with an optional poly mode).
Having said that, the ASID approach above can actually be used a bit more in a live situation, also on the Sid Station. I implemented ASID into SID Factory II (tracker for Windows, Linux & macOS) a while back but we sadly haven’t released a public build with it yet. I demoed it at X’2024 during this talk. Now, it can’t be synced to external gear but having said that, I think I should add some support for that as well
Full ASID support including the new timing related commands. Will work specifically nice with TeensyROM and USBSID-Pico (in addition to regular support on SidStation, TherapSid etc).
