Moving house
The build quality of the 1200/1210s is a rare thing. Friend of mine has a pair from the early 80’s and they’re still in perfect working order.
ProJect something. It works. The stylus is pretty good though Goldring 2300.
Some Luke Slater to see the night out. Looking forward to hear his new one which should be on its way.
My old 1200s have taken a lot of abuse but still going strong. This Echophony Rinne reissue, trying to get a good 24/96 rip for my iPod:
Half-speed mastered at Abbey Road Studios by Miles Showell, Time Capsule’s high-tech analogue reissue is the first to reproduce composer Tsutomu Ōhashi’s ground-breaking “Hypersonic Effect” theory on vinyl, cutting frequencies beyond human hearing into wax to capture the full emotional spectrum of this extraordinary work.
I think this just means that they don’t roll off at 20k, sounds good to me either way.
I have a pretty good and relatively cheap ultrasonic cleaner which I think is pretty important to enjoying playing vinyl - can live with a bit of pop and crackle as part of the charm, but my system is pretty unforgiving on that stuff.
Also trying to keep things organised - I don’t have a monster collection, but it’s still a couple of thousand and sometimes (often) it’s just too much hassle to to go digging stuff out. But on the other hand just going in at random digging around and seeing what’s there is a pleasure that more efficient ways of accessing music can’t come close to matching.
gotta see what the whole collection looks like. also shoutout to the Allen & Heath mixer you got, does it sound as good as i’ve heard for the last 15-ish years?
I sorted my house and techno records once about a decade ago (now its about 1,5k, back then probably 800 or so), but have never put records back in their spots or added new acquisitions to the system. As convenient as it is to find a specific record quickly when you’re looking for it, you kind of lose the surprising finds that you get when digging through more chaotic stacks of records.
Will post a picture of my 1210s tomorrow.
I’ve had my 1200s for over 30 years now and still going strong. Mastersounds 2 valve is wonderful. Currently listing to Meat Beat Manifesto’s Storm the Studio.
I’ve always wanted a mastersounds. I’m without a mixer at the moment and I think I’m going to go for the Union Audio Orbit 4. I’ve not used a rotary before but I think all I really need is the simple high pass and high quality sound if I’m honest about the way I mix.
I love the Mastersounds mixer after starting on a radio shack mixer and that ugly green Gemini mixer in the 90s. Picked up the 2 Valve with effects box during covid and it is such a nice experience. All rotary mixers are beautiful but I needed a crossfader (so the Orbit is perfect)… Still pretend to scratch and have too many battle records to not have one. Wish the crossfader curve was a little tighter though they may have fixed it with the Orbit.
What an incredible record. Makes me want to hear it and makes me hungry.
Quick question if you please: What’s the resistance like on the main pot? I had a tinker with the super expensive Orbit 6 in a shop and they were heavier than I’d expected on that one,but it’s a different best to the others I believe.
Love this comp!! LEGEND!
They’re fairly heavy, definitely more so than any mixer (like Pioneer) that I’ve used. This is the only rotary I’ve owned so can’t say how it compares to other expensive mixers.
thats literally one of my faves!
An old Denon, rocking the “Pleasantville” soundtrack I found for free on the side of the road last weekend. (Never seen the film, but it’s some nice sample material at least.)
