Woah what’s that bottom right?
a nice kitten… ![]()
Reminds me of visiting my aunty and cousins in aus, having a nice evening meal in the house, I take my whiskey outside to relax “oh just remember your ok on the decking, the near grass is probably fine, just do not go anywhere near the back of the garden… ever” … hmm I think I’ll enjoy my whiskey inside, thanks aunty!
Are those ground owls? And a wild bearded dragon? Loving this.
I dunno, they would be pretty exotic to me if I saw them out my window.
A bearded dragon. He was a bit upset when I disturbed him in the woodpile. I threw him lots of worms and grubs but he refused to be placated. This is a different one:
A pair of kookaburras sitting on the stump.
I think I mistook his beak for part of the landscape. It looked like one of these Tawnys that I had seen but are obviously not native to North America so it’s still pretty exotic to me.
I hate to link to tiktok as this is probably the only video I’ve ever watched on there, but I love this interaction between the girl and her dad and the rescued tawny, and a surprise guest as well!
Ah yeah, they’re not related and the beak is very different, but otherwise I reckon the tawny frogmouth and kookaburras look a bit alike in size and shape.
Edit: another kookaburra snapped today… and a bit of spring colour.
Already June, and this thread is still dormant! I was living vicariously through others due to not having a garden for almost 10 years. Unfortunately, I don’t have much room for a garden now but was craving a few pepper plants. This will have to do!
That planner is going to get crowded quickly. Hopefully they’re far enough apart to get some peppers!
Awesome! What kind of peppers?
And I’d recommend getting a few 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot - one for each plant. Drill some holes in the bottom for drainage then fill the bottom with a few inches of rocks/gravel then fill the rest with soil. The root balls on pepper plants get surprisingly big and they’ll quickly become root bound in the existing planter. Also, give those bastards full sun.
When you water them, soak them until water starts coming out of the bottom then don’t water again until the top couple inches of soil have dried out. Only then do you soak the bastards again. Also, water the soil not the plant if you know what I mean. Don’t just spray ‘em down, but put the hose at the base of the plant like you’re filling the bucket.
When you plant them, mix in a little fertilizer ( stuff made for tomatoes will work fine) and a little bone meal. After a couple months you can add a little more fertilizer and bone meal to the top layer of soil.
Great tips! Thank you!

I wish I’d had the camera ready for the incident that happened here this morning, but I didn’t so I’ll just have to use words:
I was looking out of our kitchen window at a blackbird, sitting 3-4 meters away on our lawn. It was busy searching for worms in the lawn, but stopped and looked at me for a moment. I thought to myself, «I hope our cat haven’t seen you…».
Just as I was having this thought, a hawk rammed the blackbird from above! I jumped, it happened so quickly. Luckily the blackbird got away. I got a good look at the hawk. It had the colours and patterns of a goshawk, but due to the size I reckon it must have been a sparrowhawk.
Thanks for the advice! I couldn’t do buckets as it’s visible to the street and the wife would punch me in the forehead so I got three small ish planters to put in between our current planters(housing plants via buckets)!
Using the other planter I got, planted a few green bean plants and radishes!
Looking good! Time for a beer! ![]()
