Li, X., & Ody-Brasier, A. (2025). When breaking the law gets you the job: Evidence from the electronic dance music community. Administrative Science Quarterly, 70(3), 611–654. https://doi.org/10.1177/00018392251320898
“We propose that lawbreaking can elicit informal support when it is construed as a disinterested action—intended to serve thecommunity rather than the perpetrator. We study how illegal remixing (‘‘bootlegging’’) affects an artist’s ability to secure opening act and other performance opportunities in the electronic dance music (EDM) community, whose members endorse the substance of copyright law but whose norms about bootlegging are ambiguous. Data on 38,784 disc jockeys (DJs) across 97 countries over 10 years reveal that producing bootlegs is associated with more opportunities to perform, compared to producing official remixes or original music.”

Great story behind Zed becoming a producer and the birth of a Garage banger.
Cuckoo in action at the Empress Effects promotional event in Ottawa yesterday:
A nice Q&A session and then some great tunes, including some awesome new material played on Digitakt II.
What a nice guy!
So, is Cuckoo like 7 feet tall?
2.13 meters to be precise
that sounds like seven feet to me but I’ve been known to flub the metric system whenever it really counts.
The metric system really counts every time !
The brits are said to convert to it inch by inch…
With the help of this and my Valeton GP-5, I was able to create something that sounded like this, hooked up to my Digitone II.
The local library has a really nice offering of creative events - here’s some acrylic-based gel prints I made at the most recent one.
At some point I’ll go to the DJ workshop and finally learn beat matching.
