I am struggling with note length when syncing the SH101 arpeggiator or the Sequencer with the EXT CLK IN to an RD9
I am sending the RD9 Trigger Out 1 synced to the rimshot out using a guitar cable to the EXT CLK IN on the SH101. All works, but I am getting issues with note length.
I put a simple 16 notes of rimshot into a pattern, expecting it to play the sequence / arp as expected, but its holding the odd note, turning a random note into an 1/8th, before the next one triggers.
I have tried 1 PPS and every PPQ setting, but it keeps losing the notes.
Any ideas?
It’s a known issue with sh101 (just based on internet knowledge), you have to mess around with the rim shot sound or it won’t trigger correctly. Tubbutec fixes the behavior but it’s not cost effective when you just want what you’re doing to work.
Like I said, just strictly based on internet knowledge and not practical knowledge, play with the rim shot volume and duration until it triggers correctly.
some resource:
HOW TO SEND TRIGGER FROM KEYSTEP PRO TO EXT CLK OF ROLAND SH101 - Gearspace
The choir discusses the quirk.
I have reduced the decay and its basically its randomly missing the odd note, that’s what the issue is.
The RD9 has three trigger outs
TRIG 1 - takes the source from the rimshot notes
TRIG 2 - takes the source from the clap notes
TRIG 3 - is assignable.
So I made TRIG 3 the clap to see if there was an improvement and its the same issue. It skips abut every ten notes or so.
I think I am right in saying the RD9 TRIG outs don’t need the output from the rimshot as source. I tried that and it doesn’t start the SH101…
just guessing that if it’s that regular (every 10 notes) there’s some issue with the clock division. It’s close, but not on the same pulse or something, like every 10 notes it’s cycle is not close enough to trigger. really don’t know though.

I found a video of a guy triggering sh-101 with an rd6 and it says he’s using a tom output, try that maybe.

it could just be your synths though.

I sussed it out - the SH101 envelope mode is the issue - it has three settings - GATE+TRIG / GATE / LFO - needs to be set to GATE not GATE+TRIG. Now runs seamlessly with the RD9 Clock out to 1PPS

Here’s a tip: Set the LFO to S&H mode, then play a note and hit HOLD. Run triggers into the EXT CLOCK IN and set the LFO to alter the filter cutoff. You should be able to hear if any of the triggers are being skipped.
