Okay so my setup is keystep 37 midi out to digitakt 2 midi in, digitakt midi thru to digitone 2 midi in, keystep 37 can play either digitone or digitakt by selecting the channel via the keystep…all good.
But i cannot sync the digitakt and digitone, i swapped around the midi leads and got them synced, but lost the ability to play digitone via keystep keyboard , any advice would be greatly received .
Thanks
KS would need to be master clock there. DT won’t send its clock out of its midi thru.
All I can think is to midi out from DT into KS then midi out from KS and split it to the midi in of both Elektron but I’m not certain you’ll get program changes to go through to DN as not tried something like that.
MIDI thru only echoes what arrives at the MIDI in port.
A device can’t send data on MIDI thru, only on MIDI out.
So I’m am i right in thinking a midi merger box would solve this problem?
My setup is the same, except Analog Four instead of Digitakt. I use a midi merger between the A4 and DN. A4 midi out and thru go to the merger box, which then connects to DN. I can sync A4->DN, and control either with the keystep.
One issue you might have is whether the Digitakt will pass pitchbend and aftertouch. I don’t think that works on the original DT. Not sure about DT2
If you want to do it all from the keystep then yes, you need an extra box to merge the keystep data with the data traveling between the two Elektron boxes.
You’ll also want it to do a “thru” and send the keystep data to the first Elektron box in the chain. ![]()
Think you’d need a splitter out of KS with one side into DT the other into a merge box joining the Out from DT and going into DN
Edit: like he said ![]()
Or just play the DN and use DT for sample sequences.
You can use a MIDI Track on the DT II to pass the MIDI messages to the DN II. Set the MIDI Channel to the same Channel as the DN II Autochannel.
KS 37 Out > DT In
DT Out > DN In
This, too.
Set up a MIDI track on the DN2 (you’ve got plenty of tracks) and it will pass the keypress values along when that track is selected.
Much cheaper, but you cant select device from the keystep.
There’s MIDI boxes with multiple ins and outs that can be routed any way you want.
