Setup question with digitakt + digitone + keystep

hi there!

I have a nice setup with digitakt + digitone + keystep, and now zoia.
Digitakt is master and send program changes / pattern changes to digitone
keystep for playing digitone, via midibox.

I try to slim that setup, and I’m trying to get rid of that midi box (it has a power plug, and with cables, it’s heavy… and ok, I want to replace that weight by zoia weight  ) to do the same thing as before…

I’m pretty sure it’s possible to do it, but I can’t find the right configuration…

can you help me ? (obi wan kenobi?) :scream_cat:

There is no need for a “midibox” to achieve what you want. Your block diagram is appropriate for your needs.

The Keystep has a midi thru you can enable in the software.
If the Keystep is just playing notes on Digitone, one option is to have it in the middle of the chain. With Midi Thru turned on, the Digitakt transport, program changes etc should pass through to Digitone.
If you don’t want Digitakt transport to start the Keystep sequencer, I think you can change a setting that set the sequencer to ‘arm’ mode.

Otherwise, in your diagram the Keystep Midi note are going to be coming out of the Digitakt Midi Thru, not the Midi Out I believe.

The way you have things connected will work, you just need to setup a MIDI track on the Digitakt for each track of the Digitone and have the Digitone listen on those four channels and also set the Digitakt to send clock.

That’s probably simpler

Here’s a way to do it.

DN has the midi clock!

The DN midi out goes to the KS Midi in
The KS midi out goes to the DN midi in
The DN midi thru goes to the DT for the Midi clock.

The KS has dip switches on the back, set these to sync from Midi clock in.
Set the KS Midi Out to Midi Thru in the KS control center software.
Press Play button on KS to get arps and sequences.

Now with this setup the KS is always locked in perfect sync with the DN bpm.
The arp and sequencer on the KS have a division setting to change the speed

OK.

I dit things like that, and now everthing’s working.

digitakt midi out > keystep midi in [keystep sync in switches] > keystep midi out > digitone midi in.

sometimes it’s simpler…

Hi,

I’m have the similar setup, but I would like to Keystep to control both digitakt and digitone, so I can try using the DT as a synth as well with Single Cycle Wave. I would still like to have DT as the master to sync both DN and KS. Is this possbile without an extra midi box? How else can I achieve this?

If you do KS in–> Digitakt in–> Digitone in–>KS (so that the KS gets the clock) you should be able to control both with the KS and stay in sync.

You just need to set the KS to the auto channel on the Digitakt and whatever channel is selected you will be controlling (if single cycle is on channel 5, and that’s selected, you will be playing that). Then you need to make sure you have a midi channel on the Digitakt set up to be controlling the Digitone (probable set to the auto channel on the Digitone). You will control the digitone when that channel is selected on the Digitakt, and you don’t ever need to switch off the channel on the KS.

This is just one option of course…only downfall is that the Digitakt doesn’t pass pitch or mod wheel data so you won’t be able to use those on the KS, but you can turn the knobs on the Digitakt to control them if you want.

Hopefully I explained that ok…

thanks p0k for advice. I will give it a try later today.

Finally got time to try what you mentioned.
What I did was
KS out to DT in
DT out to DN in
DN out to KS in

I didn’t really get the autochannel part. What I did wa s DT autochannel 9 and DN autochannel 12. When I change KS to channel 9, I can play the DT, but nothing gets thru to the DN. Midi sync works fine, starting and stopping DN with DT as master.

Let’s say I select autochannel on DN to 9 and I play track 9 of DT as a chromatic keyboard, should I be able to trigger the DN this way? This is just for test purposes so that I can know that midi notes are pass out of DT to DN.

If I plug DT thru to DN, then notes gets pass through to DN. But I can’t use the master sync on the DT.

Maybe it be easier if I state what I would like to achieve and see what possibilities are there.

Basically I would like not to repatch midi cables (if possible) and have DT as master and KS to control both DT and DN and if possible to have the chance to use the mod wheel n pitch bend on the DN. Next plans would be to try polyphony on the DT and add a future synth to that setup.

Any advice or ideas?

Set the MIDI channel number on one of the MIDI tracks on the DT to 12. When this MIDI track is active, the notes from the KS get fed to it and therefore to the autochannel feature on the DT. Therefore the KS should send notes to whichever track is active on the DN.

Finally got time with the digis. Thanks PeterHanes for the tip, now it works.

p0k, yes i got it working…pitch n mod wheel with knob…err… :upside_down_face: kindof strange. But it works. Maybe I might get a midi interface.

thanks for help!

Old thread I know, but where do you place the Zoia in your setup? I don’t have a keystep. Since upgrading to Digitakt/Tone combo i’m struggling with where to put the Zoia.

What do you want to achieve with the Zoia in your setup ?

Mostly apply effects to Digitone only for now

Edit: But I’d love to hear any one’s setup regarding Digitone/Digitakt/Zoia and possible configurations.

I put zoia on my mixer aux with a dedicated track. I use it for fx…
