Setting up Morningstar MC6 MkII with AR

Just got an MC6 MkII to use with the AR. Super excited! So far not getting them to talk to each other yet. Putting a screenshot here of my basic start/stop setting for button C. Am I doing anything wrong here, is there a certain setting I need to check on the AR? I think it’s set to receive midi, but there seem to be a few different menus to go through there so I could definitely be missing something.
Thanks!
@sjvl

Morningstar have some great videos + manual on their webspace. Did my setup long time ago.

Yeah I looked through this stuff, could have missed something but if you know anything that specifically references what I’m trying to do above or the AR please send a link

Thanks!

Ok.

-Rytm midi setting has to “receive transport”

That receives start/stop etc

Yeah that’s checked. I checked, “prog channel receive” which did something, it seems to receive a “play” command but the pattern won’t actually play. Strange. So still stuck on step 1 here. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Adam

@cometsincaves

Im out of town (only got the OT, mic, and an acoustic with me hehe) but the main thing here is to go thru all the midi settings on rytm first.

Note that there are a bunch of other mc6 editor settings to consider. For example:

Pos: 1, 2, or BOTH. This should be 1 for 1st message, and 2 for a second message, generally. BOTH would be if you wanted two midi commands to happen simultaneously.

  • what are your send/receive clock settings? I think you should only have those set to “send clock”.

  • For program changes, receive pc messages should be checked as you have done. Then on “channels” page, set the PROGRAM CHANGE IN CH to AUTO or an actual channel number. If you want to do this step by step then: choose channel 14 as auto channel.

Then in morningstar editor:
Action: press
Type: program change
Pc number: just put in 16 for this test
Send to all midi channels: NO (but you totally can)
Midi channel: 14
Pos: 1

Say thats for preset A first position.

Do same thing for sevond position of A but change pc number to 17 and pos: 2.

Pressing A first should switch you to pattern B01
Pressing B second time should switch you to pattern B02

Now! I use the deprecated pc scroll up and down. That is the way to have it scroll through patterns, up with one button, down with another button. They use pc number scroll so you may have to figure out how that works got your firmware.

@sjvl
thanks for writing all this out. went though it one by one and still not getting anything to work including the test. Tried toggling a few other settings too. I emailed Elektron to see if they had any pointers. One other weird thing I’m noticing is on the Morningstar, unless I’m doing something wrong, the preset titles are glitching back to “EMPTY” even after they’re saved kinda erratically. Seems to be on the latest firmware.

Hmmm thats weird. Elektron probably wont have much for you. The challenge is on the mc6 side.

Ok what about trying something different.

See if you can get to the point of playing notes with the mc6 buttons.

I will assume your rytm has BD (pad 1) set to midi channel 1. In rytm midi settings, check RECEIVE NOTES.

Then in morningstar editor:
Action: press
Type: note on
Note number: 60
Velocity: 127
Midi channel: 1
Pos: 1

That better damn well send note 60 to BD…youll see BD light up and make sound eh….if not, something is still configured wrong……or broken. Try different midi cable. Reboot. Start new project….etc etc…

@sjvl ok I’ll try this asap. Are you connecting the MC6 to the AR via midi cable or usb? I’m using a midi cable right now, so I can use the editor at the same time.

Has to be thru din midi. Rytm doesnt do any midi from usb.

@sjvl I got it working, the play/stop after switching MIDI cables! So I think that may have been the culprit. Excited to start exploring some of the other options now but just grateful to have my foot in the door finally here haha

@sjvl or anyone who knows. What is the order of operations to program muting and unmuting of a track within a pattern? For example like if you wanted to take your kick drum in and out with a button.

or is the only way to do this by creating scenes that use the volume controls on different tracks? @sjvl
