Serum 2

I think most real world music applications m4 max is overkill, but it is fun

I’ve created a preset pack for Serum 2 .
With the update, there’s a lot more possible—but hear for yourself!

I made a digeridoo by accident, sounded surprisingly “real” with Serum 2.

Just picked this up. Somewhat surprised that AU support is via a VST wrapper. Hoping it’s a smooth experience.
Given the reputation of the developer, I’m assuming so.

First time Serum user so I’m excited to give it a go.

AK doesn’t have that, the only Keytrack is on the Filter. Keymap is for multitimbral patches, it’s not a mod source. I mean if you were totally insane you could mimic it I guess. So far I’m not meeting that bar! And yes it’s one of the major lacks in the otherwise totally cool architecture.

He uses a Analog4 Wavetable, found that video today. I already making my own version. (Distortion on the delay.) The voices can offset modulation values, or drift in unision, pitch - something i only used in diva. It has so many features now, takes really weeks /month /years to explore everything.

Happy to see the Analog4 is also a “classic” synth now. (It absolutly is.)

I made my own version - maybe you can improve on it.

Oof.
Serum 2 joins only my AAS plugins for a single CPU spike when monitoring a Serum 2 track in Logic Pro (AU wrapper version of Serum 2)

It ‘goes away’ once you’ve recorded AND if you select another track that doesn’t spike the CPU (say, an empty track, which is a hack most Logic Pro users might remember from years ago when ‘overload’ messages were so horrible in LP).

Even then it’s 25% of a CPU per instance on most of the presets I’ve tried before being grumpy and turning to something else, like Omnisphere, or Microwave, or Pigments, or Wavestate Native, or Modwave Native… or any other heavier hitting plugin I have.

And when it’s spiking, which it does in the vast majority of presets selected, it’s unusable… clicks/pops/static/dropouts. Ugh.

It also pops every time a new preset is selected. Speaker-threatening pops.

This is on an M4 Pro Mac mini, MOTU 828 (current) with MOTU drivers. Clean install. nothing else running. Clean boot. Buffers at 32 and 64 (I won’t go higher than 64 since literally everything else works perfectly at such low settings).

It’s a bit disappointing, as I find th 8 hours I’ve spent ‘using’ it to have been ‘work’ - not creativity, which is exactly how I feel when I used to use AAS plugins for the same reason, and I don’t use them any more. They’re installed to give me a basis for comparison to things like this.

It’s clearly working for some, and I’m going to stay with it and see how it pans out, and maybe there’s a setting I can tweak somewhere, but so far it’s not ready for my setup apparently.

I do see that many of the folks reporting stellar performance and track counts are using Live. Is that the VST version, perhaps? (I hate wrappers; I just really do, for no real technical reason, really, lol).

Hope they fix it. AAS never has.

Logic cant do vst?

Nope

Alright, so it’s happening — I suspected it would. A lot of companies are starting to release compilations of old preset packs with new artwork, labeling them as “SERUM 2 Bundle” or playing on the association between SERUM and the number 2… And I honestly find that really disgusting. SERUM 1 and SERUM 2 are not the same thing.

Even though you can check a box in SERUM 2’s preferences to enable some level of compatibility with presets from Version 1, personally, I prefer to keep those presets in Version 1 and separate my database from the Version 2 presets.

So be careful — really dig into what you’re buying. Take a good look at the bundle’s content. If the soundbanks were released before SERUM 2 came out, there’s a high chance it’s just a marketing ploy that deserves to be blacklisted.

little hint :
if DISCOUNTED this is not real SERUM 2 sound bank. period

[ If you don’t see why … please don’t reply. ]
at least I had warn people who could (and should) be disappointed like me on those sort of marketing scam

How to recognize ? easy. they use 2 oscillators and only wavetables. Probably comes with a noises folder telling you to copy in serum 1 locations. Serum 2 locations are not the same folder structure

There’s a real chance the real serum2 comes in the form of an installer specific to Serum2 (a bit like those .omnisphere bank installer file for Omnisphere)
Those comes in .SerumPack (full expansion) & .SerumPreset (Individual Sounds) if you get .fxp files it’s mostly scam

Certified SERUM 2 goodies

Real SERUM 2 Soundbanks :

What this guy achieved is phenomenal to me

[gumroad] undulaemusic Undulae Legato Strings for Serum 2 (Cello, Viola, Violin)

important : Sounds better for Melody (not good with chords but you can stack instances) and As of right now, this pack only sounds the way he intended when the host is set to a sample rate of 44,100 (probably a serum 2 update to fix that convolver)

Comment from the creator :
[Legato] Cello, Viola, Violin, Saxolin (Colin Stetson’s sax playing), Ableton 12 project file of a realistic depiction of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G, Prelude, using the Legato Cello patch, for educational and demonstrative purposes.

I spent a lot of time making sure these sound as good as possible at the standard expected range of each instrument. But I want to stress that in order to get convincing performances out of them, you really have to take the time to automate the macros in a way that mirrors how an actual performer would interpret the piece. If you hate automating macros, this is not for you, and I’d recommend hiring string players instead.
