Select a track using external midi

Hi,

Does anyone know if there’s a way to silently select a track using an external midi controller? I can play each track but I’d like to be able to select the track silently, as if I were pressing the TRK key and a number pad on the digitakt.

I think the answer is ‘no’ but I wanted to double check.

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

AFAIK, with Elektrons, you can do it with Octatrack only…

When you play the track it’s selected, but it’s done audibly, is that correct?

I haven’t tried this but if you’re doing it from a computer or with a controller that can send a note with a velocity or level value of 0 then I don’t see why not. I would assume that it’s only triggering the note because it has a velocity attached, you’d have to try it though, and also make sure the next key press goes back to whatever the normal value your controller sends is.

Like I said though, I haven’t tried it, just thinking that if the note triggers with no audible sound it’s the same result as the silent track select function on the hardware.

Good idea but active track can’t be selected with midi notes anyway. Would be annoying if it was with any note.

With OT it is possible to increment/decrement selected track with 2 specific notes, not playing samples.

Oh, yeah, obvious when you stop to think about it.

I think the easier approach here (depending on the controller, usually it’s easy) would be to have the tracks listen to distinct midi channels, then change the channel on the controller to control different tracks…

Yes, and i think would interrupt anything playing on that channel.

Working out the capabilities of the Digitakt often ends with ‘no, but the octotrack can’ (which is fine, I think the DT’s great).

Yes, this should be fine and eight tracks isn’t too much to navigate or set up.

(Though I still think it would be a useful function)

Doesn’t mean OT is better for you. Just an information.
I oftenly said OT was better than DT before but…

I found DT1 much more interesting after Grid/Slice possibilities (last OS).

Imho DT2 is a game changer considering stereo sample playback, with +/- 5 octaves pitch range, modulations, etc.

Octatrack is unique for its recording capabilities, audio routing allowing feedback, various effects, crossfader control…

Happy to have DT2 and OT, for different purposes.
