Hi guys, i’m trying to figure something out and am having a hard time with it. Here’s the thing:

in my project i have an amount of tunes with (long) sample chains. I’m quite happy with these tracks as they are. But my project’s memory capacity is hitting the ceiling and i’ve got some of my favourite chains to import still.

So i have sped up the longest chains by 200%, both pitch and tempo, to try and free up memory.

However, when i replace the chains with the updated ones i can’t get 'em to sound like they used to. Furthermore sometimes i had pitched stuff down to the max, so i can’t get the tuning right and stuff starts to sound like chipmunks.

Is there perhaps a trick or formula for this? Both sample chains + Elektron are relatively new to me…
Any advice would be much appreciated

EDIT: perhaps i should try and redo the chains with only sped up tempo and not pitch, but it’s a little labour intensive plus i’m having trouble figuring out how Rytm will read these new chains and their slicing points

Sounds like you need a second AR :ambulance:

well, freq doubles with increasing octaves
double the playback speed (200%) as you have done should then only require you to play back at half-speed (-12)

so you save RAM at the expense of resolution and you affect the range of pitch swing you have left (due to offsetting the position of normal)

all ratios (ie % to semitone) will be easy to ascertain if you Google it - but for octaves the maths is nice and easy

for the AR, you need the captured sample to speed up tape stylee not ableton stylee

Thanks again for your advice!
I’ve decided to ditch the playback speed method in this case. Tunes just sound different, not as nice as they used to with these updated chains.
Had a few long stereo chains in use and started using them mono and now the plan works. It’s not as bad a sacrifice. Am rougly at 58 mb now and just have some drum loops and single cycle waveforms to import, so i’m a happy camper.
And when starting tunes from scratch with 200% sped up chains it works like a breeze. So with future projects 64 mb should be quite adequate
