Science Lab Challenge, February 2015

Obviously it’s every elektronaut’s dream to have one of each of these wild machines… If Elektron decided to give increasing amount of discount for the second, third, forth, fifth machine, it would be almost impossible not to buy them all…

I’m really happy to take partition in this challenge. It was great competition.

I would like to say “THANK YOU so much” to all participants. This is pleasure to read comments and to listen to tracks.

Congratulations to the winners and to top12-performance.

In my mind, winners’ choice of Elektron team is peculiar, but they are looking to our works from their ELEKTRON’s mind. I want to thank great company for their hard work.

Waiting for challenges next time…

This was super fun! Congrats to the winner and the top 12!

How often do these competitions pop up?

Even just a simple community based competition without the prizes each month would be fun. This competition got me to explore new creative ground so I’d love to take part in more of these!

Right on! Thanks!

Finally listening to the playlist of the 12 winners…I’m simply blown away by the talented people here. It’s time to really step up my game.

One thing I noticed in a lot of entries were some very analogish sounds from the Octatrack. I’d love to know how you’re getting those sounds.

And I had no GAS for an AR until this competition. I’ve got to give that another look.

Well done everyone, seriously

In the beginning of the challenge it was announced that we could get access to the sysex files of the winners so we can take a look at how they achieved their tracks. Any news on that? Where can I download Zillamatics sysex file, for example?

Bonjour !

this is not a simple drawing device

Reflecting back on the challenge, the number of submissions widely exceeded our expectations, we are very sorry but uploading them all to our SoundCloud account is simply not doable. The time consumed would be too great.

Reading the thread during and after the submission phase, it seems that many new things were learned by many people. This is of course awesome!

We are already planning the next challenge, and though this is not an official announcement, we aim for the next challenge in May …

Finally, here are the projects for the winner and runners-up, enjoy!

Thank you for posting all this @fredrikalm.

Even with the wide range of participations you guys still managed to keep the choosing phase short enough, that’s good work
Plus you still ask for more !!
:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Mental !

Looks like fredrikalm now provided three or so.
I would guess though that if you want anybody here’s submission you’d only have to private message them directly for a copy of the files.

i load them up to soundcloud if you give me your password / access to soundcloud and send me the mp3s form the contestants …

Hello Elektronauts family!

Firstly I have to congratullate all the participants and the vibe on the forum, for sure a good way to keep the productive energy flowing.

The level on the submited tracks was incredible, I decided to participate alltough at the momment, making music is a pleasure I can´t really take for granted, but I love limitations so much that decided to spend a whole afternoon with this, rather simple, but well choosen vocal sample.

Anyway I made it to the 12th position, which is just a great honour.

I was asked by the elektron team to upload my sysex files and HD recording prior to final decision. Because just the top three are available, before I delete them I thought it would be nice to post them here, in case people are interested in having a look

All the best!!

If Elektron guys read this…

I really think you should make a video about this contest on YouTube. If you play the sample all these tracks were made out of and explain in brief how they were made, it will blow people’s minds and will show the enormous power that is hidden within these machines.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the congratulations. Means a lot to me to be recognised by all these amazing musicians. In the end I chose an Analog Keys as my prize! It arrived yesterday and is very fun to play.

As requested by a few people, here’s a video covering how I made the track. It goes into sound design, and covers a little on using the song arranger and performance mode. Excuse the rambling and editing, I’m not used to talking on camera

In other news, a group of us want to continue with exploring out machines through group ‘missions’, if you’re interested check out this thread and help us organise it.

Wow, I actually learned quite a few things. like track routing (had no idea it was there) and the numerical values of the LFO (how they are related to octaves) and some basic stuff about envelopes. Thanks a lot. And mostly thanks for a track that is inspirational (only wish it was longer). Enjoy your well deserved prize.

Zillamatic - that video was fantastic. Super well explained and very cool to get inside such a great track!

Also, one of the best videos I’ve seen for getting a view of how the AR can be used to good effect. I’m really struck by how much more flexible it is than the MD in terms of sample manipulation. Melodically, it’s not even a contest. The effects sound much better and the whole machine is not surprisingly a good deal warmer than the MD. I guess they both have their own unique sounds (listening to all the tracks from the science lab your ear can really tune into the signature of each), perhaps I’m just getting to a point where I’d prefer the warmer sounds of the AR. I know I want at that chromatic mode really badly…

Congrats again on your well deserved win. I keep wanting to come back to listen to it!

excellent video, thanks for putting it together. enjoy your AK!

Hi there,

Great contest and congrats for everyone!

That’s a pity that I didn’t have a chance to take a part of it, because I’m the owner of AK only…

Maybe it’s a good idea to make also a synth competition, huh ?
What do you think ?
