Saving in c6 before updating?

Aloha !!!

I need some advice. I never updated or saved my sounds on computer until now. Tried a few times and got angry witch is stupid but I'm allready all day behind a pc for my job and I stopped composing on PC because it gave as many problems as solutions.

I want to update but I want to rely on the + DRIVE instead of saving on my PC .
I’ve created quite some stuff on both instruments ( AK - A4 ) and don’t
wanna lose this .

Should I save before updating ??? any risk loosing sounds or projects if I don’t ???

Wouldn’t it be great if Elektron created a kind of external-harddisk witch would understand all Elektron instruments without any problems with samples includen for the RITTEM etc…
before they make any other machine I would prefer something like that.

Can I update without worrying ?

People in the Keys forum are having trouble with the update – I’d hold off on upgrading for now.

You should definitly save the project on the +drive before updating to a new OS . Once i had a NVram error after an OS downgrade, the current project was gone, but i could bring it back. Just loaded the save from the +drive.
From time to time i would recommend to save all your work on a computer though.
I had no problems on my desktop a4 with the 1.12D update btw.

thanx for the answers OK, everything is saved on the + DRIVE . So it’s better to save on my PC before upgrading ? So it’s possible that my stuff on the + DRIVE get’s messed up when upgrading ???

No dont think so, just if the whole machine gets bricked due the update ^^ wich will most likely not happen. Your data would still be intact on the +drive.

It’s good practice to have redundant backups. Aside from +Drive, my C6 sysex dumps are saved in a Dropbox folder. I can access it anywhere, and the files are saved locally on my computer.
Juuuuust in case.

I often imagine a scenario where I get to a city for a gig and there is an issue with my equipment, and am able to find a Rytm and A4 locally for the gig, I just dump my sysex from the cloud and I am still able to perform. Mind you, I’ve done everything in my power to prevent issues with equipment when traveling (always have gear in carry-on luggage, etc), I still need a backup plan. sysex dumps to a cloud is my backup.

I also keep write protected copies of my live projects on the +Drive. And perform from those, so that I don’t mistakenly edit them.

The back up process can be a bit tricky - I’ve lost quite a few sounds migrating from an AK to an A4. Saving at the Project level didn’t quite catch everything the manual says it will catch (I was missing Banks, Sounds). I did my best to back up at every level (project, bank, sound, etc.) and that saved me quite a lot of pain.
The trouble seemed to be though that when backing up (for example) Sounds it was actually backing up something else, not sure if that was a bug or just user error… Make a few folders for multiple back up “techniques” - label it properly and you should be ok.

Download C6 application from Elektron - it handles sysex data and is pretty easy to use. More details in the manual
