Sample slice grid query

If I CREATE SLICE GRID does this mean wherever that particular sample resides on a particular TRACK, then I cannot add more samples to that TRACK as it being taken up by the sliced loop? (not sure if my question is making sense). Or would it be advisable not to slice the loop in order to play multiple samples/loops within one TRACK… so confused.

Sorry I’m moving my shit across from MPC to OT. So am still finding my way around the OT work flow.

Can each TRACK act somewhat like a BANK as per the MPC?

Your question makes sense. Or maybe your confusion is understandable because it is a complex subject. You can:

Put more than one one shot sample on a track. Each track has a default sample though. On any given step in the pattern on the track, you can change which sample from the pool is used on that step. This is called a sample lock.
I’m pretty sure you can do something similar with sliced loops where you can do slice locks from other sliced loops.

As far as a good workflow, I am still finding my way there as well.

you can assign only 1 sample to a track at a time be it sliced or not. once a sample from a slot is assigned to a track you can use sound locks (trig + level) to lock different samples to the trigs on that track. but you can’t create key groups like on akai samplers. in this sense the octatrack is what you might call a monophonic sampler. it does make up for this short fall in other ways though

yeah exactly right. if you use a sample from your flex list but want to add just one particular slice from a different sample it is a combination of sample lock and then slice lock. if you’re going through the manual it can be a bit mad to get at first. there’s a helpful supplementary manual on the old elektron forum. explains it all a bit better in my opinion. have a look. it’s the link marked ‘‘ot thoughts’’

So if I do place a sampled loop via ‘sample lock’, will the loop playback be cut off by the next (different) sample across the sequencer. eg:

Drum loop sample (1 bar) is placed on TRIG 1. If I place a one shot sample on TRIG 5 will the drum loop sample playback stop or continue it’s full length?
(OT not in front of me at the moment - otherwise I’d simply try it myself!)

Gotta get my head around the OT work flow.

There is just one rule :

Per track you can’t play more than one sample at the same time.

Besides this simple rule, you can sequence all the samples you want on the same track. You can have samples from different slots, slides, etc

For example if you have a sliced drum loop sequenced on a track, and then you want to change the Snare for a clap that you have on other sample slot on the pool, of course you can, also you can change that snare by another snare from another sliced drum loop that you have in another sample slot.

Try the sample lock function.

Wile step recording, press and hold a Trigger, then move the Level knob, you’ll see a list with all the sample you have on the pool for that particular machine, either static or flex.

An easy way to record sample locks is using the Slots mode for the triggers, In that way you can directly access all your slots and record them using live record.

yep long samples will get cut off by any other punctuating sample on the same track. like a mono synth gets cut off if you hold one ket and press another. i’ve never looked at this with one shot sample trigs though. presumably they also get cut off

Haven’t made any recordings using the Octatrack yet but it’s on my list of things to do. One of these days i’ll get down to recording a set with it. It’s a savage instrument. Find myself doing something different with it every time.

all will become clearer (i hope) when i get my hands on an OT (soon) - but are sample chains, different to slicing a sample - and is the only limitation that the OT will only slice evenly as a workflow option, not that slices need to be equi-sized - it doesn’t do recycle style transient detection - are there any good tools to prepare material which are OT specific, i have a few options on the mac i think, just wondering whether some are better than others
