Sample Management for Octatrack

Hi All,

Just landed a beautiful Octatrack, but before I go and do something silly like dump my whole sample collection into it, I thought I would seek some guidance from you fine people as to any tips, tricks or advice you have on preparing samples for the OT.

Obviously lots of aproaches that I could consider, so really just interested in hearing how others have approached this, workflow file managent etc.

many thanks!

Name loops with bpm. Create sample chains for one shots.

I have my OT setup so the same type of sounds go on the same channel everytime… then i made folders for each channel, then made all my samples the same bar length and put the key in the name

The samples on my OT, mirror the folder structure on my laptop.
Although naming loops with bpm is great, I just keep mine in folders labeled with bpms

I have a multi platform audio and midi librarian / editor / database that I’ve coded that I use for myself.

I have a multi platform Octatrack editor that I’ve coded that I use for myself.

I find my personal processes quite fluid.

Holistically:

  • BPM’s in file names
  • Create sample chains of 64 x Kicks; 64 x Snares; 64 x random percussion etc
  • Name samples in a logical manner when organising: Song_Key__Bars_BPM etc

OR

Just don’t worry about it at all; you can sort it all out later
