Rytm slice calculation tool

I threw together an online slice calculation tool for new Rytm users or anyone trying to get their head around how to use chains and slices on the Rytm.

You can find it here:

http://bit.ly/rytmcalc

Basically it gives you a list of all the available slice counts for a Rytm sample chain, and when you pick one it shows you the start and end points for each sample.

It’s nothing fancy but it does the job. Of course if I’ve made one or more glaring errors, let me know and I’ll fix it up.

handy tool thanks, but you missed 5 slices, 24 per sample.

Thanks for this.

Schoolboy error! Thanks for the tip-off. I’ve updated the source, but I think it’ll take a few minutes for bl.ocks to pick it up.

Edit: seems to have gone through now. Thanks again!

Edit 2: Replied to the wrong comment. The sun was in my eyes.

Thankyou! Fixed.

Nice little tool!

Nice! When you change the combobox/dropdown with the arrows it doesn’t update until you hit enter though. Dunno if that’s worth fixing. :stuck_out_tongue:

Good stuff, thanks!

Browser behaviour, I think - it does update automatically in Chrome (for me), but not in Firefox. They must differ in what they consider a change in the value.

I hadn’t considered that aspect, to be honest - I just rattled it off over lunch - but it’d be nice if the behaviour was consistent and as usable as possible - I’ll work something out later.

I did try putting some nice buttons for the slice selection, but aligning them means using one long row of 15 or 3x5 / 5x3, none of which look good (or adding a button for ‘1 slice’, which would be madness).

Just imagine how much easier my life would be if you’d based it around 128 slices… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

128!

:zonked:

Thanks for making this, Nick! I use it quite often; it’s bookmarked in my browser.

Just featured the sample slice calculator in this blog post, along with a workflow tutorial about sample chains, specifically how they are used in the Acid Sound Pack.

Hope it helps make more sense of how to use sample chains.

Great! In fact I arrived at the Acid Sound Pack page independently while browsing Rytm packs, and noticed the link to the tool, which I’d forgotten about. So I came to the forum to check for any new comments, and here we are. Glad you find it useful!

Thanks, looks useful.

:+1: Definitely

I just tried to use it and it´s not working anymore. Any ideas?
Thanks !

Just checked and it’s still working for me. In case you’re having trouble with the bitly short link, the full address is: http://bl.ocks.org/NickDimmock/raw/3e8dd44a8e777129d332/. As I say, it looks fine at this end. You can also get the source code from https://gist.github.com/NickDimmock/3e8dd44a8e777129d332 - it’s a single-page web app, and most of it is CSS. I’ve just added a CC-BY licence to it, which I thought I’d already done. Hope that helps!

Thanks Nick. I just checked and its working on chrome, but not on FF57 (at least not here). No prob, I switch to chrome for this.
Thanks again.
