RYTM separate outs or stereo for recording. Which do you do?

Just wanted to take an informal poll on this. Do you guys separate out things or do you record as a stereo pair or somewhere in-between on the RYTM?

Traditionally with my MD I used to separate out my kicks to a separate channel but leave most everything else in a stereo pair, with that usually running through an FMR RNLA. That gave me enough flexibility in regards to kick levels. I’m a big fan of capturing a performance and doing light but not major editing afterwards in Logic…

So now with the RYTM I’m wondering what you guys do…

I really like the vibe of the compressor and think it sounds pretty great, especially with the kick pumping it. I realize all the cons of recording a stereo chunk and its inflexibility but also really like the vibe of that chunk and how it sounds coming straight out… Basically mixing everything before you hit record.

What do you guys think?

When I had a Tempest, I used multiple outs. Once I got the RYTM I went to using stereo outs. I like the simplicity and I’d rather spend time mixing on the machines instead of the computer. Also I usually intend to play live, no computer.

I’ve found that the AR has been flexible enough that it can handle the majority of the mixing itself as long as I wait until the majority of the mix is completed elsewhere before hitting record on the drum track. At that point only minimal processing on the 2 track is needed if at all. But I’m a big fan of minimal processing. And I really like the compressor. And I’m running short on cables/patch leads.

If I was keeping the entire process OTB, and going through a console direct to 2 track, then I’d probably want to use the separate outs. I hope to be able to do this in a few years time when I have the appropriate space (and money) for a large console + outboard.

I use the individual outs. Stereo summing in the AR sounds too muddy to me and I’m not even that critical! I don’t use use any of the internal effects though. I have slightly better outboard stuff plus I need the kick, snare and hats separate.

Only BD1 for better low-end mixing. But sometimes I run everything through the stereo outs and fiddle with the SEQ compressor settings.

I haven’t really tried to properly “track” my Rytm yet. When it eventually will come to that, I’ll be going with the indi outs to the DAW, processed with plugins, out from a bus back to the Rytm’s input for a bit of 2bus compression and back to the DAW again from the master outs. This will give me all the tracks separately + a bus compressed stem for using in parallel processing.

That is, if we’re talking proper tracking - for general purpose messabouting & jamming, I’ll just record it any way I can, usually resulting in just a 2-track rec of what’s coming out from the speakers/headphones, all instruments & FX included :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

^ :+1:

That is a great idea!

One has to be latency-consicous when going this route though! Might even need realining the busprocessed 2track with the rest of the tracks after recording…
