Rytm MK1 + Digitakt vs Rytm MK2

Anyone else considering this combo? Instead selling the MK1 for the MK2 why not simply buy the digitakt as a companion to the MK1

Am I missing something or am I simply too old for the ego approval of the newest shiniest of everything x

That’s actually what I did. I ordered a Digitakt at the end of June from Musician’s Friend after they sent me a 15% off coupon (It still hasn’t shipped yet, but that’s another story…). I Mk2 hadn’t been announced yet. When it was announced, I didn’t feel too bad.

Here’s what I figure:
-I’m already attached to my mk1. I know it well. I also don’t want to deal with SYSEX dumps/transfers for my existing projects (is that even a thing?).
-I don’t need to pay extra for Overbridge. It currently works fine in my setup for my needs.
-I haven’t used the physical individual outs, ever.
-I currently have my A4 and AR racked in the only configuration that will work in my office. The new form factors will ruin my layout.
-I gain MIDI sequencing.

The whole cost of selling my Mk1, dealing with shipping, and putting that money toward the Mk2+OB is probably more expensive than the overall cost that I paid for the Digitakt.

There’s a lot of overlap between the two boxes, but I wonder about this too. It’s hard to ascertain without having used one, but I would love to hear people’s opinions using samples between the two boxes. On the DT it looks like gel, but I’m wondering if the workflows are that different? A LOT of the functionality is on the Rytm, you just don’t get a UI to suppprt it. I guess your not talking about replacing one or the other, but I’d say about 90% of what can be achieved with samples on the DT can be achieved on the Rytm, yeah? Or nah

for me, i like to sit on the couch and mess around in wee hours of the morning and with that being the case, there’s a lot to be said for having one single box. idk though, are there any specific details about the mk2 OS?

I’m usually in the “one box” mindset too but the mindset could be “sampling, mangling” or “analog depth and tweaking” and thus the box chooses itself

I would prefer this setup over an MK2 and thought about getting a Digitakt as comrade for my AR during the last days. Buying an MK2 is completely off the table. Here are my thoughts:

  • two devices give you more flexibility for livesets and transitions between tracks

  • the Digitakt has the same size format as the AR mk1 and looks fantastic next to it

  • easy to use onboard sampling is the only advantage that has the mk2 over the mk1 in my opinion. Having this covered by the Digitakt leaves the mk2 empty handed

Really comes down to whether or not you need midi sequencing?
If not RYTM mk2 would be my choice.

Rytm has a couple other features like Scenes and Performance modes. As well as a proper Song mode.

Yes. But the mk1 has that as well and I was under the impression that the he already has an mk1 AR and his options are a) sell the mk1 and get a mk2 or b) keep the mk1 and get an additional digitakt.

I’m headed this way - it’s got loads of advantages such as having 18 sample tracks across both machines and midi sequencing.

I’m desperately hoping that we get a sensible sample management programme for both machines though - if Rytm Mk1 misses out, this will be almost enough to upgrade for me alone (don’t get any ideas Elektron :evil: ).

Seems like a really good combination, especially since the DT has midi tracks. You can midi CC control pretty much every aspect of the Analog Rytm. Performance level and scene selection on a per step basis must be so cool to have.

DT outputs into the AR compressor might be quite handy if the DT output are hot enough.

I haven’t even tried the midi sequencing with the DT yet, its on my list of things to do. The only part of the dark trinity I have left is the OT (I released the A4 to a new home a little while ago, and have yet to own an AR). I was set on the idea of having my existing OTMK1 with the three MK2’s but the AR MK1 with the DT seems like a logical solution rather than buying all of the MK2’s when I don’t gain much over the older models. Should be easy to get an AR MK1 with a discounted price tag when the MK2’s come out. thank you for opening my eyes to this option!

Edit: No word on Analog Keys MK2, I would rather the AK over the AR mk1. I guess there isn’t any need for me to purchase any of the MK2 models.

The thought of DT–>Rytm conditional scene selection, per step, + MIDI LFOs on Performance level just sold me on the DT as a Rytm side kick.

Is there a way to transfer samples between the two without c6? Is this something Strom should be able to handle?
