Rytm Issue, I need your help! Recording parameter change fault

What are peoples thoughts with this issue I’ve encountered?

I’m currently paying for studio time this week, and a lot of my music has the Rytm in the core of each track so the following problem is bringing things to a complete hault, so any help solving would be appreciated!!

As you can see from the video -

I have a simple bass loop, and I allow it to play for the full 64 steps before turning the record button on so it flashes. I then record a simple filter frequency sweep up and back down - after I’ve recorded the 64 steps I turn the recording mode off, and let the loop play back so you can hear the result of my filter sweep.

As you can hear the recording I made of the sweep bares no resemblance to the final result?!

It’s driving me mad, as I’ve arranged the various patterns in song mode, and have that synced up with my project in Ableton, however each time I go to record a filter sweep or any kind of live take it totally scrambles the result on play back?

Been battling with this for hours this evening, and don’t know what else to try?

I’ve even programmed, on a step by step basis, a filter sweep and resonance automation across 256 STEPS via parameter locks! But it still didn’t behave and do as programmed?

Is this a bug?

Fault with the unit?

I just don’t want to record everything in as audio in order to finish this track - as i really want to make best use of the fact that I can fine tune each section’s transition, within the Rytm before recording to audio.

Try employing parameter slide.

Is this necessary when recording the filter frequency is recorded in ‘Live recording’ Mode?

I understand why they would be necessary if programming step by step - but surely the live recording mode can capture a filter sweep without having to input the slide trigs for each step individually?

I’ve recreated the problem on the MT channel, by copying pattern and sound - and the same thing happens -

In live record mode it is still only recording parameter locks per step.

There is no recording of parameter locks in between steps.

So you’d have to employ slide on each trig on each step.

The only way around this would be to automate it via a DAW, which will have much higher MIDI automation resolution.

Were you to read Appendix C of the AR’s manual, you would find that you can externally control the filter cutoff frequency of an AR voice by using MIDI Control Change message number 74 on the correct MIDI channel for the AR track/sound that you want to control.

I don’t have Ableton Live so someone else will need to help you with that.

I have read that from within the manual, thanks for the tip. I’m not here having not tried to set this up having read the manual. However as I’ve not ever automated hardware parameters from within ableton - I’m not sure exactly how best to go about it, and am currently struggling to set it up to work

Kotare’s answer is all you need. Automate the CC from a DAW or use slides on every step.

Thanks, Vasculator - any tips on setting ableton up so that I can send it the cc message? I’ve not had to use cc before, as have always done a live take with hardware before.

I’ve tried the slide on every step approach - however this is causing the notes to pitch bnd and glide between each note? How can I program a simple velocity fade on the rytm?

Would prefer to not use cc and program on machine, but can’t tell if it’s possible?

Right have figured out how to use midi cc messages with rytm and ableton!

(For anyone unsure - set up a new Midi channel, add the Ext instrument device, then select the midi channel 1-12, corresponding with the pad you want to edit, and then make a clip and drag into the arrange and edit the cc value you need within the envelope of the clip)

Now how can I create the same effect in rytm’s sequencer??

I have tried slides, however it slides the notes too, and i just want it to do a smooth volume or cut off slide?

Yeah slides slide all parameters. Tricky (if not all but useless) bugger.
Manually? Or is that too archaic?
Performance pad?

Slides won’t work if you’ve got note changes too.

Try using LFOs. Be creative.

For now I’ve managed to do a live recording of the parameter changes as cc into ableton but would prefer to program it all in the Rytm.

How would I have, for example in a live situation where ableton isnt present, a smooth volume fade across a four bar pattern without sliding the pitch of the notes at the same time?!

LFO Is assigned to patch, had already considered that - am I completely misunderstanding how the Rytm works? I would’ve thought such automation would be simple in this machine!

Is this the only answer?! Seems mad! How about if you want to have a pattern with a filter cut off fade in a pattern ready to be triggered live? To do this live would you have to do the automation live? Or not have a filter sweep?

No, I meant, "“hit-record-and-do-it-live” manually. But I’m sure you’ve considered it…hence the moji.

I’m afraid filter sweeps like you mention are primarily designed around using the LFOs (that’s my guess anyway?), which are tempo syncable. You have no way to sacrifice the function the LFO is performing at the moment?

For what you want to be able to do, I doubt perfomance macros nor scenes would help either… tricky. How about resampling your existing sound and using the resulting sample in its place, opening up the LFO for new use? just a thought…
