Also noteworthy: the Netherlands are a fairly compact country. You can go from downtown Rotterdam to the beach, e.g., Hoek van Holland in no time using public transport. Also The Hague and Delft are always worth a (short) trip. A little further away, but also high on my personal list is Den Bosch.

if you’re into cycling and bike racing, consider checking out the Hoogerheide Cyclocross World Cup on the 28th. looks like it’s about a 1.5 hr train ride from Rotterdam. that’s definitely what I would do if I were there!

And just like most people from Amsterdam I suffer from the childish idea that everything outside of Amsterdam is some rural area where nothing of importance ever happens, so I advice you to just take the train to Amsterdam

Just kidding, Rotterdam is way more of a metropolitan city than Amsterdam which is basically a village with a million of inhabitants.

Rotterdam is a great place to walk around, it has old buildings, but also spectacular new architecture, mainly along the river. The germans bombed the entire city center to pieces which was rebuilt after the war.

Warung mini (surinamese food place) has the best gevulde bara met pom (no idea how to translate that) of the Netherlands, highly suggested.

Correction. Part of the city center was bombed and the rest was demolished by the city planners who redesigned it after the war. It s a persistent myth that it was all destroyed in the war.

Part of my fathers family lived in Rotterdam during the war, and if I have to believe their stories the entirety of Rotterdam was bombed, their house was the only one left standing and they were the only ones lucky enough to walk out alive with bombs falling left and right of them.

So yeah I believe you when you say theres a lot of myths and exaggeration going on haha.

Ha!

Until recently I lived in an 1895 built house right on the perimeter of the area that went up in flames. It s visualized by lit red markings in the sidewalks. One could walk the whole perimeter following those marks.

My neighbor brought a myth into life fabulating the story that an ornament on our facade is cracked because of the heat of the fire. He once overheard a guide telling it to a group of asian tourists

Most places have already been mentioned. In the Witte the Withstraat across the street of Worm there’s two bigger contemporary art spaces called Tent and Melly (I worked for six years at Melly!).

Next door of Worm there’s a media art kind of initiative called V2 that you might like; bordering on visual, audio and digital art often:

V2_ is an interdisciplinary center for art and technology in Rotterdam (the Netherlands).

If you’re going to go and visit Willem Twee Studios in Den Bosch be sure to check out if theres any interesting show in their Toonzaal (downstairs). Saw quite some exquisite jazz performances last year. They also program some evenings for people who produce electronic music.

In Amsterdam check out Bimhuis for the same.

In Rotterdam i only know about the places already mentioned….and of course the photography museum
