Roto Control (MIDI controller by Melbourne Instruments)

Why burn a good thing?

I initially posted the issues I was having here because the official support channel was avoiding my direct questions and told me my 2nd defective unit was just exhibiting “quirks.”

It was only after I posted my raw data here and pushed back in the ticket that a new agent took over the case. Ian then jumped into this thread to publicly diagnose my setup as an environmental RF issue, but the moment I pointed out the physical, out-of-the-box defect (a loose, rattling knob on replacement unit #2), he suddenly asked to move strictly back to official channels. I am currently waiting for support to clarify if shipping a unit with a physically loose, rattling encoder is covered under their warranty.

The idea that a user shouldn’t discuss major quality control issues and support hurdles on a dedicated hardware forum just to protect a brand’s image doesn’t make much sense to me.

Regarding the comment about “burning a good thing”, holding a vendor accountable to deliver functional hardware isn’t burning a bridge. It is just the standard baseline for a commercial transaction.

Have you updated the remote script? that was the issue for me.

I am of the same opinion.

That’s the first thing i did, but maybe i did something wrong. Will try again

There are many times on this forum i found answers to my problems for different devices from other users who had same issues and posted answer and solution.

it’s a relief seeing so many folks entering the conversation / praising the roto control as i recently ordered one (still need to pick it up / out of town in work)and was getting nervous w/ all of the discouraging experiences.

excited to report back on my own experiences. :crossed_fingers:t3:

It’s a good midi controller, i use it daily, and never had issues, that weren’t solved within days

Me and my bandmate both have Rotos, and both are working well and reliable. I’m excited to see what more they can do with it.

I also don’t have any issues with people with problems posting about them here as it does give a wider user base and prospective buyers an idea of reliability and fixes to common issues - but when people start tagging company reps who only post intermittantly it can create drama.

I also think it’s understandable and entirely forseeable that there will be some quality control issues from time-to-time, particularly when Melbourne Instruments are entering a new segment of the market (affordable midi controller vs expensive boutique synths). But the minimum I would expect from any music tech hardware company: stand by your products.

If mine had come with a loose knob I’d expect a rapid replacement or repair under warranty. I had a wobbly encoder on my Push 2 when I first got it, and Ableton replaced it with very little fuss.

Same here. I’d like to know if there are some problems, if other users are experiencing it, to know what’s the cause if it ever pops up on mine. Isn’t that what a forum is for? Of course no hardware or software are issues free, but it’s how these issues are resolved by the vendor or manufacturer that really determines the standard. I think where the misunderstanding happens is when a vendor or support thinks a user (or complaint) is being too fussy or nit picky. Which could be the case, but, that’s par for the course. What if it was genuine?

With SO many options out there now for almost very similar functionality, I do my research quite carefully not just on the features, but the support and after sales service before I part with my hard earned cash. I think that’s very reasonable as a buyer of any goods and services.

just wanted to chime back in after having some cycles w/ the roto-ctrl; it is absolutely exquisite. i’ve only used mix and plugin mode, but i wanna look into using it as a dawless midi controller.

at the moment, it’s been my favorite out of the box experience w/ a daw (bitwig here). the only struggle i’ve had is interacting w/ nested devices (eg digging into the “note fx” section where all my program change / cc controls are) which requires me to physically click into the chain. other than that, i’ve really really been enjoying it. at this point, i would highly recommend it for a (mostly) seamless daw controlling experience. :rocket:

edit: one last thing, you can’t assign controls to modulators (eg butttons etc) / that would also be a nice addition.

Are there any Octatrack power users here using the Rotary Controller with it for live use? Any issues to be aware of? Things you love about it?

I’m assuming I’d have to manually map everything I’d want to control on the RC but I was wondering if I select a track on the OT, will the RC jump to those parameters? eg. if I set up a page of knobs on the RC for each track of the OT.

I hope this makes sense? I’ve yet to demo one so I don’t know the lay of the land on the RC yet.

You’d have to send the cc (I don’t remember which) that makes the OT spit out all the values of its params from the RC manually, but other than that, it should work.

It’s CC 61 IIRC.

alas, i have a usb c switch, but that’s not working for this purpose.

anyone using a particular one to make it easier to power off while having it connected ?

edit: ordered one that supports 15w :crossed_fingers:t3:

Works great!

Touching knobs should switch tracks in plugin mode too.

100%

Also the knobs don’t seem to do anything when in Plugin mode and viewing all the tracks. It’d be cool for them to either default to track volume or even better, assignable to any parameter within Live.

This device is becoming indispensable to my setup. So much so that I bought a 2nd one so I don’t have to keep shuttling one between studio and home.

Interestingly the Ableton control script is in pure unadulterated python, not obscured or encrypted. Took no time at all for my coding buddy  to understand it and to learn how to open up plugin and mix modes (by pretending to be Ableton, lol). I’ve already got a really nice control scheme for my Nord Stage 2 (which is my main daily driver keyboard).

Actually this is the case for all third party surface scripts and there are multiple git repos with the decompiled python scripts that ableton packages.
I think i modified or fixed the scripts for all the devices im using, ableton does a mediocre job on these scripts for third party vendors (i bet push code looks much better, jokes aside, thats facts)
There is actually a bug in the Roto script that i still have to report. One that causes redraws of the screens even though nothing changed

There were some folks who seemed to have issues when Roto-Control 3.2.0 was released.

Did those get sorted? Any reason not to upgrade?
