Roto Control (MIDI controller by Melbourne Instruments)

Roto-Control and the OT work great together in different scenarios such as: Roto-Control + Octatrack: Live Dub Techno There will be an update where Roto will be able to send MIDI note values and program changes. I think some of your issues could relate to this, but will need more details.

I have PMed you and happy to follow this up for you.

Just saying – I appreciate this so much :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Does this mean we might get some rudimentary midi sequencing from the Roto in the future? I’m loving this device. You guys are doing great.

If I wanted to create a mapping for a song, say 8 knobs that are useful to perform the song… does this mapping have to live on the Roto Control rather than in the Live set? By which I mean I’d have to manually switch to that songs page when I load the song? Is there even a good way to create a mapping like that which has controls from various tracks and devices? My interpretation of the manual is that this isn’t possible

You would use the Roto’s midi mode, and then map the knobs in Ableton as with any other midi controller.

Not sure if it will have two-way communication in thst mode though.

Thanks! Ah right yeah, at which point it’s basically just another MIDI controller. This is more the use case I have in mind than mapping plugins so not sure this will be a great fit as it is, sadly!

The way the iPad app Knobbler works is the ideal for me, it has a Max device in the project which stores that song’s mapping. Maybe Melbourne will go this way at some point as I do love the idea otherwise

If there is a drop. down menu that has more than 16 options (such as scale in the SQ sequencer) its there a way to manage this with the Roto control?

No. 16 is the max right now. You could use two knobs perhaps?

Thanks. how would I set that up?

Use the Learn function to assign the same Ableton parameter to two knobs, then use the Roto editor app to set the number of steps. You might need to futz with the min and max values to line things up

I have no idea if this will actually work, though! Good luck.

You can assign more then 16 on a knob, but don’t put them into steps, and yes you will need to fiddle with max value, because there will be overshoot.
Basically act as a regular knob, just going through drop down menu options.
Once you nail max value for last option in drop down menu, all other will be spread correctly.
I think i have example on one of vsts, just need to remember which one.
Also it won’t be stepping, so it’s more sensitive, but it works

Another option is to use a button to step through the options. I use that for, say, selecting filter types.

Yeah but button can’t go more then 16, right?
Or is it the same when not choosing steps?

Doesn’t the button just keep going through the list?

Yeah ok, not sure now… Will check

Not in my hands. 16 only

Damn!

I’m falling in love with this thing.

What VST synths are people enjoying using with the Roto control? I’m looking for one that maps nicely and doesn’t have too many parameters.

I mapped Softube Model82 (sh101) and D16 303. It’s amazing to play with them like real instruments using roto.
Hopefully Melbourne Instruments will make a page where people can share their vst mappings
