It wouldn’t be listed anywhere. However, you can use this handy shortcut to see and adjust each track’s Level, Decay, Pan, RevSend, DlySend, LFO Depth, and Gain (different than volume level set with track slider): SHIFT + CTRL SELECT
Use the ‘VALUE’ knob to scroll through each settings page and use the ‘CTRL’ knob on each track to adjust. It’s a great way to see the values set on each track for each of the above parameters.
This won’t show you the LFO destination that’s set on each instrument. It will show you that there is LFO depth set though. You would need to go into the INST (SHIFT + INST) settings page to see what parameter the LFO is set to modulate.
I imagine they would, yes. I don’t have anything default on my device though so I cannot check.
There isn’t a manual or document that I’m aware of that shows all of the default values across all of the default kits. Using the ‘SHIFT + [CTRL]’ menu is the only way I know of to see the values for each of the aforementioned settings at a glance. To find out exactly what an LFO is modulating, you have to go into the ‘INST’ configuration and scroll to that value.
You’ll eventually just make and save your own kits at which point this should no longer be an issue.
Some Tips and Tricks. Some I got from great members here (thx @Microtribe, +…). Just a reminder that it’s a great drum machine !
To rough up the Stock Hifi-sounding TR8S from the master output for live use and make it bang and more organic sounding, set first the KIT Level to max 128 ! Very important ! This way you hit the nice sounding Soft Clipper of the Master Output. Put the Compressor on the Master Insert and adjust to taste. Glue it a bit for example with a longer Attack. Adjust Release for groove. Mix with dry/wet. This is for the 909 Kit. I think I use 909 lowbass. But choose any 909 Kit as you like and go with the flow On the kick track insert the Saturator effect. It is basically a Multiband-Distortion and EQ. With the Lowband EQ with Q you can really sculpt your 909 kick to your liking. Add Drive and mix it in with Sense and Balance. Adjust Gain. After some time you will get the feeling for the balance of it all. Thousands of variations possible! Also important : I edit with the very good free TR8s editor from Roland. Much easier ! Save your work ! For 909 tom-bass-lines do this : Route all three toms out of assign 1 output, use a 6,3mm audio patch-cable out and back into the input. Turn on Sidechain on the input and adjust how you like it pumping and letting the kick always cut through the mix. I adjust the decay of the toms pretty short and the 909 decay to taste. Its the balance between kick and bass than and what you let through with the Sidechain envelope. Many different groove feelings possible. Put a Lowpass Filter insert effect on all three toms. Filter highs out with the assignable ctrl knob how you like it, to get deep bass-lines. Set step length 8 on all three tom tracks. Put on the three tom tracks different triggers, but they should not overlap with themselves (not two toms should play at the same time) and also not trigger on the kick steps. Now you can program very fast tom-bass-lines that groove with the kick because of the sidechain and with the tune knob you get instant variations + you can just mute some of the toms tracks live by just putting the fader down and making your bass-line less busy. Of course add some %swing% for the booty ! Put the Saturator insert effect on the hats and cymbals too. Assign drive to the ctrl knob (hats & ride, cymbal). This way it’s like a gain knob, but it saturates = so not rising the dynamics too much and I can always have my fader full up for performance and adjust loudness with the ctrl knob. You don’t want always the 909 ride slay through the corpses ! I know it’s fun ! hehehe… You can make the Tr8s pretty banging like that. Not much after-processing needed and it cuts through the room in a live-situation by herself! Yes, it’s her and I love her ! Try it ! I had the Rytm 7 years! Great machine, but I like the Roland sound and groove much more ! I guess, it’s my age hö hö ! And the linear envelopes were unfortunate for sample playback and adjusting the decay live with the Rytm. My favorite is the TR8S drum machine so far ! But you must tweak it and build your kits with the editor and then it has the best interface with the faders for live-performance by far ! Ok a OG 909 is still my favorite, but for other reasons.
6.3" audio cable I assume. Just some short ones to bring a pair of the outputs back to the EXT. IN. You can route things out then back in so you can sidechain them from the kick (or any other track if you like).
Yes but this way you can sidechain tracks from the TR8S. The EXT. IN can be pumped from any of the 11 tracks.
You could have synth stabs on the all of the LT MT HT tracks and route them out a pair of external outs then right back in through the EXT.IN inputs. Set the kick as the side chain source and you’re now pumping the stabs.
Yeah, I am making techno, so basic bass-lines are enough for me and they are toms. Long bass notes are not possible anyway. And second : this way you only have to program 6 steps and that means that you can alter the triggers very fast, instead to change them through all 16 steps. Couple it with the tune knob and the assigned lowpass filter ctrl knob for each tom and you are creating rapidly new sequences and tom/bass sounds.
