Oh! To be honest, I didn’t go that far. Until a few days ago I had a completely different setup and routed everything out separately. Now I switched to a live setup, and it’s the master out, and I’m finetuning the gain staging. I don’t see the need to go much above 6dB, because I use saturator effects on the inserts and a compressor on every track. Combined with the analog drive on the master, the result is really loud and I feel like I’m hitting the softclipper already. Maybe you’re hitting the clipper already too?
What’s improved now: you can make the individual tracks louder and go less on the master. This improves the noise floor in combination with the analog stage. And what else really improved: I don’t need any normalization anymore when sampling. At -6dB it’s loud and you get a phat waveform. But it’s a challenge to find the perfect balance of all the gain stages — and it depends on what sound you’re after and what instruments and effects you use on the track level and bus level. But many, many possibilities and flavours are possible.
A super cool feature would be an overview with metering and signal flow, showing where you hit the limits. It would help with finetuning, but it’s OK with ears too — just a bit of switching through the gain stages: track amp, track compressor, master effect, analog stage…
So it’s hard to say if it’s a bug or a safety net kicking in. Depends on your configuration, I guess. But yeah, with the TR-1000, it can always also be a bug! Roland should improve their documentation too. It’s not a small thing to change gainstructure on an instrument.
FYI according to the audio block diagram, the soft clipper is bypassed when you send stuff through the AFX. Only the tracks that bypass the AFX will go throught the soft clipper circuit.
Does make sense as everything will be clipped by the analog drive circuit anyways.
I agree it would be really useful to have an overview for gain staging, similar to how Leviasynth does this.
This is NOT intuitive AT ALL. My 20+ year MachineDrum Mk1 can do this and yet the TR-1k needs to have constant clock to function properly?? This is beyond moronic. It must be true, we are devolving at least as far as drum machine firmware goes.
What?!? How else would I know that when sync (analog clock in my case) is not running from the master that the keys to trigger internal sounds do not work?? Please… explain.
Works fine on mine, what version are you on? You responded to a 6 months old post and maybe it needed clock back then, now on version 1.20 it just works…
It only “works” when there is a steady clock from the master. You stop the clock - the pads don’t function. Major fail. This is on 1.20. If you set sync to “Auto”, it “should” know when analog clock is on/off. Apparently it doesn’t.
And I’m only using analog clock because of the well-documented issues this thing has had with MIDI clock. It is tight w/ analog clock, I will give it that.
i opened up my ticket with Roland regarding my button paint like a month back and they told me they would put it on hold until they receive stock. Followed up on Sunday since everyone is sending theirs back and haven’t heard back since.
Same here. I opened a warranty ticket with Roland about the fading button paint around a month ago. They acknowledged it’s a known issue affecting a specific production run and told me they’d replace the buttons under warranty, but the ticket is currently on hold while they wait for replacement parts from Japan.
I followed up again recently and was told they’re still trying to determine stock availability and shipping delays, with no firm ETA yet. It’s getting a little frustrating given how long it’s taking for a known manufacturing defect on a relatively new unit.
Mine is supposed to come out of Thomann on the 15th (I bought it a long time ago)… when it arrives I’ll take a picture of it to see if it’s dark or light gray.
