Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 2)

I can only speak about the Digitone but I sequence my SP (SX & MKII) a lot wit it! Super simple and works great!

I’d be up for some SP battle type things here if there are no genre limitations so I can explore freely. Would be fun.

I have an A4mk1 and never use it to sequence my SP404mk2 (or any external gear) b/c you have to sacrifice one of your precious tracks for it and it is a little bit clunky. Thats where the Digis really shine and I sequence thell hell out of my Sp404mk2 with it.

You can use the CV track to sequence an external piece of gear over midi, which would probably work but I wouldn’t expect it to be an enjoyable experience.

I sequence playback of sample pads on my 404 on occasion and use my Digitakt generally. I do not sequence the patterns on the 404, so can’t speak to that.

If you set the 404 to Midi Mode B, you get one midi channel controlling the pads in banks A-E and another midi channel controlling the pads in banks F-J. That mode assigns a note number to each of the pads ascending through the banks from left to right.

This means that when I’m working on stuff on the 404 I use the first set of banks to do my sampling and resampling. Then when I have pads I want to play with a sequencer, I copy them into the pads of the second set of banks in a cluster close together.

Then on the sequencer I can keep all of the things I want to trigger in around an octave range, which make inputting the sequences a little easier.

Don’t enable me. Why would one get an SP404a in addition to a mk2?

Because one’s parents were collectors and antique dealers so collector brain was passed down in the genes also, said one is autistic so when something becomes a special interest it gets a lot of attention. You should see how many Boss HM-2 pedals, and clones, I have. There was a time when I had seven different jag/jazzmasters. I used to try to get all the boutiques but fell in love with SPs.

Me too! Super easy to do!

It’s so easy to get something to sound completely different than intended in a fun way. It’s like having a huge pedal board in front of you all going in to a Tascam Portastudio.

Oh, believe me, I sympathize.

I always get two of everything. Two slightly but not meaningfully different versions of the same thing.

Hence the question.

As far as the SP-404A specifically, I saw some features that looked interesting for me. The link between it and the TR-8 got the spark going. I’m curious to see the effect of the Lo-Fi button, if it colors sound only that’s been sampled, or if it colors sound passing through the EXT SOURCE. My thought is to keep some basic drum hits on it then have more melodics on the MK 2. Doing my drums on the A would free up polyphony on the MK 2. I have similar ideas for my P-6. I’m also always curious how the effects on each SP sound different. Plus, I’m weird and like the black and green more than the raw metal of the OG or SX. And I got it in the box for a decent price from GC, so I can return it hassle free if I hate it.

I said I’m weird.

Tried to learn how to chop and reassemble a break + jazz sample today. It made a whole lot more sense to use the SP the way the culture has embraced it. All the happy accidents from random chop-markers etc. I love that process. If I keep at it I might get better.

Love the chaotic piano and the fill at 1:03!

Oh boy… and now I am remembering why I started to make the guide and all the videos I’ve done

You can, but you need to use a plugin that has a ā€œlevelā€ option, like 303 Sim… so it’s not exactly ideal.

May the parking gods bless you for the rest of your days!

I’m not sure you get blessed for being spiteful… I had a very visceral reaction to some of the folks making ā€œmasterclassā€ content that was akin to just reading the manual. Sure I get that we all learn different ways… but I feel like my YouTube channel was kicked off in earnest because I just had such a bad taste from… very low quality… and very low value… content.

I know in a lot of ways I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel myself… I’m making some very real choices about my channel and the… production values of the content… so I suppose I shouldn’t throw stones…

Anyways… I’ll mind my own business and do my own thing off to the side

yeah i’ve seen your video on it, great trick, but unfortunately it just moves the fiddling from the mixer to the FX bus, and the mixer is a bit more immediate to deal, with for me anyways
