Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 2)

im having a vague memory of someone mentioning this problem in the past and the solution involving some kind of pad replacement. i feel like i remember it being a pretty easy thing.

edit: ok maybe not the easiest process but spvidz was what i was thinking of

Thanks!!! Sounds like a fun project!

The SP just cured my GAS for Chase Bliss pedals. I routed it to the Oxi-16, where LFOs govern the pitch and speed of the loopers, along with a bit crusher, filters, and additional delays

Yo SP fam! Been dustin’ off the good ol’ grey brick for some simpler beatmaking time… and I have the weirdest problem. Hear me: I’ve chopped a breakbeat to single hits, mono left but not resampled to mono though, and both my ears and my eyes can swear I’m dead on the transients. Yet, when I drop these hits in a quantized sequence, it sounds sloppy as hell, almost like super bad midi jitter. The hits are pitched down a bit which can mess with the transients, but not THAT bad… Pretty annoying.

It sounds like you might have one of the effect buses on, maybe Downer. Is that the case?

Ah, I’ve worded it poorly, sorry. I’ve pitched down the chope by 3 semi tones. No bus fx activated at all!

That sounds like strange behavior, Did you factory reset after the last time you updated.

Back in the day, people were having similar strange behavior and it cleared up after factory reset.

Remember you can factory reset two ways, Just do the SYSTEM DATA and you wont lose your patterns or samples.

Roland also lists this as a step after the update in the instructions!

Hope this helps it!

First track with the TR-1000. Rough draft tracked and mixed on the SP-404mk2. Only used the TR, MiniFreak, SideKick, and the SP.

Yup, pretty sure I’ve done that. I’ll do it again just in case…

I’ll also try to resample my chops after turning them to mono left to see if there is some weird latency introduced in the waveform.

Second track using the TR-1000. Melodics done on a MiniFreak. Beat on the TR. Both sent through a sidekick and mixed in the mkII.

Really nice. Listened to it twice. I especially loved the Drums in the last Section, but the whole Track is great.

Thanks! Yeah ngl, I’m kinda proud of those drums at the end. I love being able to get a drum machine to get after it.

One Thing I didn’t realize for a long Time was that you need smashing Cymbals (real ones, samples, or something that comes close) to make a Song, even an electronic one, rock out. I always think of early The Sword as Reference, they completely overdid the Cymbals, but it was glourious as Hell.

Yeah, cymbals have always been my frustration with most drum machines. That and microtiming.

Yeah, I love 606s/707s - but no rocking Cymbals. I love my DN2 - but no rocking Cymbals. I love my A4 - but no rocking Cymbals.

I like sampling cymbals from easy drummer. Haha!

First video I’ve seen of that sound generator mod

Looking good. I don’t understand the drama around these mods, I’m grateful to the community for the options to install stuff like that. For me both the mods in this video are interesting, looking forward to more for the SP404mk2!

Yeah, I’ll be interested to see if they expand the synth drums. From my own experiments with AI development earlier this year, random generators (within a useable parameter set) can be really interesting. Could be cool to be able to quickly cycle through some synthesized bass drums, snares, cymbals to quickly build a kit. Sometimes you don’t feel like scrolling through loads of samples trying to find the perfect one.

The only other thing that’s been on my wish list for a while is some higher-quality reverbs (spring for guitar and dub and maybe a plate that can get huge for spaced out stuff).

Oh and variable sample rates.
