Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 2)

Wonder if those command strips would work with a pedal board and pedals! That could be the way to cheat my fear of commit putting Velcro on!

I can’t believe I’ve never thought of this…

Although if you’re worried get yourself some Sticky Stuff remover, I’ve always been able to clean up my velcroed pedals.

You can move past your comitment issues friend!

Ha! I’ve been trying for years!

My biggest gripe is I like to move stuff around, a lot! So it would be kind of a pain but having it all on a board would make life so easy! Going to check this all out today. Work can wait!

The sticky side of the command strip removes really easily without leaving residue but it isn’t reusable! So if I understand correctly wouldn’t be useful in this case.

I’d just lay down velcro across the whole board and hey presto put the pedal wherever you want.

Yeah, I finally committed a a couple years back and it’s been worth it to clean up cable mess and not have things sliding around. I never thought I needed it, but actually highly recommended.

Got lost in the sauce so this thing is over 13 minutes!

Bounced to my new JVC deck before i hit it with copious SP-303 VINYL SIM

Line up was SP-404mkii, Sp-404, Sp-303 (2) JVC TD-W201 deck!

Art is from battle and made by one the hosts: UJFR!

Hope you dig!

I have a hard time finishing tracks on the SP-404 mk2, but ever since my daughter got a junior drum kit as a birthday present (and I’ve spent $$ on normal-sized hardware for me), the 404 has been in constant use. Not to finish tracks, but to record little loops from other synths and guitar to play drums to, and the skip-back feature lets me save the cool moments .

I’ve also started using my guitar and bass a lot more than I ever did with Elektron gear. Still figuring out the sequencer, but I’m having a blast recording separate guitar loops and using the sequencer to resample them into one longer loop.

bass and guitar resampled with FX:

Performing the FX on a pattern with a drum loop and guitar loop:

practicing drums over guitar loops I recorded:

I want to try making performance videos on the 404 for my youtube channel, but it’s a LOT slower than working with Elektrons, one of the main reasons being that I’m basically learning the guitar and drums as I go. I don’t have the luxury of 16th step timing windows to mute stuff, so I have to be patient and practice recording perfect loops.

TL;DR: having fun learning the 404 (and also learning guitar and drums using the 404)

Sounds awesome! If you don’t mind me ask, what are you using to record the drums?

Thanks a lot! I only have one mic, a RĆøde NT-USB Mini. I have to power it with its own psu and use a mini jack cable to connect it to the 404. It’s placed at my feet under the snare, facing the bass drum. It does pick up pedal noise, but I see it as grit and texture, hehe

All are very good but that first one!

Is the guitar direct into the SP and no effects box etc?

Sounds lovely.

Do you know the one Mic ā€œWurstā€ Micing Technique?

Thanks @abluesky!

@monsterism both bass and guitar are plugged straight into the SP without any pedals. The built in Amp Sim is pretty good, but I have to get used to them.

@Leto_II I don’t recognize the name… I’ve tried placing it

  1. in front of the kick (snare gets too muffled)
  2. over my shoulder (bass drum is too quiet and cymbals too loud)
  3. behind the drum stool (I liked this one)
  4. to the side of the kick and aimed at the snare (if I remember right, cymbals were too loud for me)
  5. on a little monkey grip stand on the bass drum aimed at me (don’t remember why I didn’t like this).

I didn’t play with these positions longer than to just get a first impression though, and I always smash the drums through the SP’s compressor so the subtleties may have been drowned out.

This made my day. Thank you.

I ordered a proper mic and mic stand, so I’m gonna try this position soon! Thanks for the tip

In the meantime I’ve been playing around a lot more with my guitar and am trying to learn the sequencer and how to perform tracks
