Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 2)

Mate, it’s a headache to figure out, I’ve still got a million questions and things to figure out myself as well.

Again it’s cool you helped, going to start have a play with what I can do alongside the move

I will only have two devices, my RME and the 404. I guess what I’m concerned about is that my mac will see my 404 as the main soundcard by accident, because when not using my computer for recording my music, I listen to a lot of podcasts and stuff, so I’d like to keep it all separated…but, I think like you said you assign the Mac soundcard in audio devices setup. Then in Ableton you also have some setup to do, being using both soundcards, one for the main outs of Ableton and then one for the track you want to add the 404 to. That makes sense. Thanks.

Doesn’t affect the system output - everything works as normal in my browser and audio file player even when I have Ableton open with an aggregate selected. Possibly not selecting the aggregate at system level affects latency or whatever, but I’ve never noticed this being an issue and have never bothered. In Ableton it’s really just a thing of knowing which inputs/outputs are which so you can select them where needed.

Re using the SP as system soundcard, the biggest downer I’d see is that afaik you wouldn’t be able to record through the SP’s ins while playing back if you want to keep it separate from the main mix. But aside from that there’s a tonne you could do in that configuration with a resample track in Ableton or just feeding the SP.

Will try it when I get a chance. At the moment I’m just using the 404 as an end effect and sampler for my gear. After that the 404’s output goes directly into my RME, then into Ableton. Using this aggregate method is the next step. Thanks so much.

learned something new today! SBF is one of the effects that i rarely use because i just dont vibe with the sound a whole lot, today i learned that there are six different SBF types to choose from! found that i really like SBF3 and SBF4. its inspired me to actually read the manual and see what the effect does lol. i ran a tt-78 loop through it and i like the robotic flavor it added.

Nice tip! Will experiment also. There’s are so many effects. Jeez.

I wouldn’t stress about that too much. The good thing about the Mac is that it’s dead easy to switch between various sound options using the little speaker icon at the top of the screen. I’m often switching between my main audio device, my iMac audio, my Airpods. All your aggregate devices will be in that list when you set them up, so it’s just a matter of clicking something if you don’t happen to be on the right soundcard. Getting the aggregate devices set up can be a bit of a pain though.

I use Rogue Amoeba Soundsource as my audio redirector on my Mac. You can redirect each individual app to it’s own audio device. It’s really a wonderful app, can recommend it.

Saw this while searching for how to install an actuator in my jeep. I wondered how long it would take for some of the 404 “influencers” to begin changing their tune on 5.0 update.

stem splitting sounds wack every time and I can’t get excited about DJ’ing with a sampler in any way sorry

I miss my TJ Wrangler! Stupid kids ruin everything!

Ha nice! Had the OG in 96. Will grab another if I find one in good condition locally. Nothing funner than the 2 door but I do love the added space in my 4 door. I’m wiring it up as a mobile studio. Sound proofing, io for all my gear and cameras to record/stream my travels.

Just wanted to add these here. Laptop risers/stand I put on SP and all of my gear really. 3 settings for a few different viewing angle options without fuss.

So far Koala and Sp404 is far better than a mpc live from testing. Decent grid edit mode, fact I can also use ipad synths if needed.

Question if anyone can help please?.

Still learning the SP, but been sequencing the SP from Ableton playing round with workflow etc. Now I was wondering, I got the midi in Ableton but is there a way I can use “print” that in pattern records if that makes sense.

So for example I have a drum beat midi track which plays on the SP. But anyway I can use that data to create a new pattern.

Or is there a way I can resample to get a perfect loop, remember using the looper ages ago. But any new discovery I may have missed?
