Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 1)

We should probably have split this thread about 500 posts ago :joy::rofl::joy:

Loved Steve Earl in it! Never did watch the last season

Does anyone know:

When you record into the sequencer and set the number of bars, is that like a master length for that pattern, or do you get to choose the number of bars every time you record a new track/pad? So you could do one take at 16 bars, another at 4, another at 32 etc. all within the same pattern to get some variation going?

If it’s like on the older SP’s you get one length for the whole pattern that all tracks/pads follow.

Anyone with a MK2 able to comment?

According to the manual at least, pattern length is set at the pattern level, rather than the pad level: Editing a Pattern (PATTERN EDIT)

Yeah, it would have been in the new feature lists and i dn’t see it in any of the reviews.

I really start to wonder why companies launch products that they aren‘t able to deliver at launch. Waiting until february doesn’t really intrigue me and I really wonder if until then something else is able to catch my attention (blackbox again….) and I end up cancelling my preorder…

Roland isn’t worried about losing a few preorders. They are a huge company. Imagine if they would have waited a couple months to announce it, to stock pile and be able to fullfil global satisfaction, whatever that is. They will have probably sold just as many units in the end. People will buy it because it is a new sampler from Roland. People will buy it because they love their 404, 303, etc. Roland is not worried about a small company like 1010. That is not to say that 1010 doesn’t make a great product, because they do, but at this point, Roland is too big to fail.

Anything Roland releases will have its followers. The Blackbox has been around for a couple years now. If that appeals to you, then pick it up. If the new 404 appeals to you, then pick one up when you get the chance. Nothing has to be right now and immediate. We will all still be making music years from now. Use what you have now.

… and the big question is allways:

Does new gear help to make more and/or “better” music or does it only raise one’s total system complexity thus leading to less music due to necessary focus on learning how to handle and integrate the new stuff.

Not to forget how much time it will consume if it’s new firmware has some faults.

I’m with you on that sentiment. I was close to cancelling my pre-order as well (when expected delivery was adjusted from “in 7-10 days” to “2nd week of February 2022” lol), but then thought — the SP404 is not essential to me. I get it because I’m excited about the workflow and excited about the simplicity and immediacy. I don’t have to have it now, but I’ll be happy to have it once I do.

So I figured I’d use this to practice my patience and contentment.

That said, looking at it as a business practice I totally agree with you, it’s sort of annoying that releases don’t release when they release…but I guess that’s the new standard and has its benefits from a marketing pov also, as much as I would like it to be different.

If I had a big company I would launch the product with a small batch available at launch date to get the excitement spreading through community. Then, based on the amount of preorders, I would plan the capacity of my production and distribution. This will prevent overstocking and make sure the production line doesnt have overcapacity.
Overstocking costs a lot of money due to the amount of money that is “stuck” in stock. Money which cant be invested fir months maybe. Furthermore, these big companies usually work with money thats a loan from banks or investors. And hence there is usually quite some interest that needs to be paid.
Also, the production of the preorders is already funded by the customer and the money that has been spent on preorders will also generate interest.
Altogether it makes perfect sense to test the waters with preorders before upscaling the production lines.

One YouTuber mentioned receiving their unit in July.

So a general release in February does feel a little bit irritating.

Not cancelling my order though, as it’s currently set for Nov 30. No worries if it’s later though.

As a customer to receive your unit late is annoying. Its good to realize too that this way of distributing units will keep the price down. Which in the end is a good think for alm the buyers

Though I’ve not seen an official Roland announcement of a “launch day”. Has anyone?

It’s blatantly going to be March 4th. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
