Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 1)

Hi all,

I am really loving my Sp404… I am basically recording samples from my hardware synths and combine them together to get tracks…
I have a questions though… is there a way to pan samples?
Thanks

From the manual:

  1. Press the [PITCH/SPEED] button.
  • The PITCH/SPEED edit screen appears.
  1. Press pads [1]–[16] to select the sample to edit.
  2. Hold down the [SHIFT] button and turn the [CTRL 3] knob.
  • The pan position of the sound changes.
4.Value:* MONO (Left), L:50–R:50, MONO (Right)
  • Your changes are automatically saved when you press the [EXIT] button.

is there an identifiable transient at the very first step of your loop? ive found that using the end snap feature doesnt work very well for me, so when i am resampling a drum loop i resample the whole loop plus the next first step. that makes it easy to place a perfect end point for your loop just before the next first step

unfortunately i do not have any suggestions if there is not a transient on the first step

I also find this playlist from Nervous Cook$ to be very thorough and helpful if your trying to learn your way around the 404mk2.

definitely if you’re comparing it with elektron.

definitely not if you’re wanting to capture your input at a super high resolution and capture unique and human grooves.

definitely when you consider how the TR-REC step editor is so anti-intuitive compared to elektron and could unlock so much creative and speedy inputs if they implemented a held note step to manually adjust volume, pitch, micro timing, FX settings etc, rather than having to re input each time. (if step resolution has 5 decimal points why the hell not retroactively allow user access to note movement forwards and backwards along the timeline!??!?!). edit: it can do this with the START parameter actually!

definitely not when you use it’s speedy crop, copy, duplicate options pattern edit options to enlarge structures from your inputs and quantize desired regions between 1-100% (YET NO UNDO!?!?!?!)

as you correctly say it all depends on your outlook going in.

but it is mental to me Roland couldn’t see how much would be unlocked expressively and per-formatively in line with so many user celebrated sequencing innovations from (not just elektron) since the og 404.
and my biggest gripe after using for a few months now is the sample looping. the convoluted and inaccurate auto and super fiddly manual bpm stuff could have totally been waylaid with a system that took your defined start end point and, when bpm sync’d, auto warped these to the bank/playing pattern bpm.
i thought they copyrighted “elastic audio” years ago…

I got the SP404mk2 to do exactly that but with an A4mk2. So far the SP design and workflow are very upsetting lol, I’m almost decided on sending it back and going for an Octatrack instead.

Could you tell me if the SP will work well with program changes, as in, have it change to a new pattern when I trigger A4’s pattern to change? Is there any hope for integrating the SP beyond sending it simple midi notes or is the midi implementation still inadequate?

also i think a last state re load isn’t too much to request.
(the heat+fx doesn’t have that yet either!)
last open sample bank, pattern and FX settings open so you can jump right back in without admin setup.

i’ll counter balance my complaints with a fun tip that some of you may have tried.

Using skip back is a great way to capture some slides of the start point for sounds.
whats great about this is you can have FX enabled
with the new kodamazanzoutogoru FX can achieve some really interesting sounds.

i wonder if the artefacts when moving the start point are reasons the 404 doesn’t have option to audibly scrub forwards/backwards in DJ mode as it would use the same system i guess. i’d be ok with it I think, in favour of having a method of finding the start point manually like traditional djing. (having a bunch of markers is fine, but more often than not you just want to throw some random audio in without setting up a load of specific start points)

A big miss you can’t use a midi controller with the USB c

I didn’t know that wasn’t possible. I read about someone using a midi fighter twister mapped to control all of the effects on SP MK2. A person lied.

Not really a lie, maybe it’s working with some but i tested a Yamaha finger drum pad & it only works with midi that is not a mess btw

The MFT was probably going into a USB->MIDI interface and to the SP that way.

If i understand well, you can control daw with the mk2 acting like a controller
