This could be a great use case for my EC4, didn’t even consider this for some reason, thanks for the pointer!
I have my guitar plugged in to an Eventide Blackhole pedal. The pedal is set to instrument level input/output. I want to sample this in to my sp404 mk2, ideally in stereo. If I run the stereo output from the blackhole to the line input on the sp404, do I have to change any gain settings anywhere on the sp?
It should work fine.
Crossing my fingers that we get another update this year, I’ve found a groove with the 404 in my workflow but there’s some features that would be so nice to have:
- Stereo harmonizer & autotune effects
- 303 style live looping
- The option to timestretch based on # of bars
Think its gonna happen?
I have a question about the sampling with a S_404mk2 and a Tascam DR-05x. For best volume and signal to noise ratio, should I use the line input or the guitar preamp input for a mono sample? Or doesn´t it matter, because I can normalize the sample anyway?
edit: As the DR-05x uses a powered condenser mic, the line level input should be the best option, right?

Thanks!
Hey,
OK so if I understand right what you were saying Witherspoon NearTao this 16bit rate limitation is only when trying to load sample on the SD card, but somehow by using USB and the app of direct sampling it Will be able to keep the original bitrate of the sample ?
That’s a curious limitation, anyway… thanks
No. If you import the audio via the app, the app will automatically convert it to the 404’s native format before copying it over.
Similarly, if you record the sample “live” on the 404, it will naturally be recorded at the native bitrate of the 404.
In neither of these cases is the original bitrate of the audio preserved. Also, in neither of these cases will it make a difference in what you hear. The native format of the 404 is 16bit 48kHz PCM which is sufficient to represent all audio in the range of human hearing.
If you hear any degradation of sound after importing or recording to the 404, likely something else is up. Post back with before and after clips of the sound and we can help diagnose.
Hey, thanks for the explaination, yeah it make more sense…
So yeah I was doing a little bit of research it seems like the main concern is about noise level if I want to use the sp as a field recorder and record subtle sounds I’m worried that I would get a lot of noise sound
Lovely stuff
Does anyone know how delay can be applied as a punch in whilst retaining the tails when it’s disabled? I like to be able to apply a delay with a lot of feedback, disable the delay and just let it decay in the background while the loops keep playing out.
My Zoom multi stomp has a “tails” setting on delays and reverbs for this use case. It just sounds so harsh for delay and reverb to just cut when you disable them.
I know I can achieve this with some careful resampling but I want to do it as a performance effect ad hoc.
Basically, instead of turning the FX on and off, keep it on but redirect your sample on and off of the FX bus.
Start the loop you want to play. Then hold REMAIN and tap its pad. It will turn white (which means it is bypassing the FX bus). Now turn on the delay FX. You should hear nothing different (because the loop is bypassing the FX bus).
Now, without touching the FX, hold REMAIN and tap the pad again. The pad will keep playing, but turn orange. That means it’s being sent to the FX bus. You’ll start hearing echos of it through the delay.
When you’re done, don’t touch the FX. Instead hold REMAIN and tap the pad you’re looping. It’ll keep playing, but turn white again to let you know it is once again bypassing the FX bus. Because the FX is still on, you’ll continue to hear delay loops, but because the FX bus is no longer being fed with audio, they will eventually die out naturally.
How does everyone like the guitar amp emulation? I’ve never tried any so I have nothing for comparison.
Basically, instead of turning the FX on and off, keep it on but redirect your sample on and off of the FX bus.
I knew there would be a workaround of sorts, it’s not perfect but much of the 404 is art and creativity to get it done. I am really enjoying using the 404 as a change up from my Digi boxes, doing some lo-fi tape loops instead of techno four on the floor is refreshing. Thank you so much.
Does anyone know if the amp sims incorporate a cab modelling as part of the fx?
Question: If the SP404 has batteries in it, and it’s also plugged into USB or mains power, which does it use first? Ideally it would only draw from the batteries if it’s not plugged in, to save from having to replace/recharge the batteries all the time…
While on batteries and plugin a USB-C power source, the USB-C power source will be used. While on USB-C power source and plugin DC, DC will be used.
