A look at the new chromatic legato mode, which definitely looks to be based on variphrase based on those demos I posted. Very cool stuff. I really like that even when adding features to compete with other samplers, it’s still a new unique spin on it that feels like it suits the SP. Getting even more excited about this update now.
(Also looks like they won Marlow Digs over with this update )
Is it just me or does the SP404 mk 2 seem more daunting than an octatrack now?
In my head, octatrack by comparison is an easier interface and probably easier to understand if you gave both machines to a newb…
Not dissing the SP, quite the contrary - it’s amazing what the Mk II can do, but there is quite a learning curve and not-obvious key-press memory to learn now.
While ive been very skeptical about feature creep, it is still one of the most intuitive devices in terms of sampling and much more plug and play or pick up and play in comparison to an octatrack, IMO
A lot of the times there are clues on the screen or with certain buttons that flash during certain modes to show that they have fuctionality.
Also probably one of the easiest sampling workflows in comparison to the new mpcs and especially a octatrack, which is can be difficult to setup to just stay record a sample.
Have you used one yet or SPs in general. it is still functions very similar to my trustee SP 404 OG, but SPS always had some unique workarounds and button combos
I just print out the button combo sheet and in a week or two its like riding a bike!
I agree, it’s quite complex particularly with all the button combos, effects busses etc. I have the basics down, though there is a lot I’m still learning.
The 404 is so intuitive it can be confusing. I remember thinking OK, how do I save this? Oh, I don’t, I can just turn off the sampler and everything is fine. Things like that have happened a few times to me lol.
I remember the learning curve with the Octa and how it almost broke me, even though I was familiar with the Elektron workflow, compared to that the SP is a walk in the park.
Oddly enough, since they added step sequencing I started using it old school for resampling and playing and I finally understood why some people say that the Sp is more an instrument than the Mpc is.
I’ve certainly had none of the “wtf won’t it record” or “wtf is it now not recording even though it did a second ago” or “wtf is NOTHING playing now” or “ffs it’s crashed. Oh yeah, I left the usb cable attached”
There are some odd shortcuts that feel a little convoluted for sure though. And I’m guessing that’s going to get worse with more updates. Didn’t the Deluge end up with a new top plate to show all the new shortcuts after a number of firmware updates?
I’d bite if that happens, I think Roland have always sold faceplates for 404s. Looked it up a while back when I was thinking of customising my SX. Not sure if that holds true with the supply shortage but that’s a chip issue supposedly so who knows
Funny, I had the same thought earlier. Roland designed this to make it easy to change the faceplate, so I would be totally down if they eventually sell an updated one with updated labeling. That would be really dope actually. I hope they eventually do it.
it’s entirely possible. I think there’s no reason for them not to do a retro when/if supply works out
@aortan stuff like FX screens are momentary unless you press remain. Then they stay on screen. It’s a bit annoying for me to be honest but I’m sure one I get used to it then it will probably be useful. If I were to design it with momentary behaviour I would have gone for hold effect+turn knob then exit when you release the button
No idea, but I noticed on B&H that they show eta of October. That said, I did notice one unit in stock at a Canadian retailer, just prior to the update. I’ve seen a few pop up new on reverb for regular retail price, and even the occasional used one for a fair price. They just go fast.
