I’m not exactly overwhelmed by the fact he used an ipad to create music, I mean he was using MPCs, SPs which are much more dated and limited to make music. After all it just teaches us all that they’re just tools.
Just because we’re speaking about Madlib, here’s a picture of DOOM with a SP-303. RIP
In the interview he said he used a 404 sometimes but they took a 303 for the cover because it looks better.
the Korg electribe app is pretty dope, I remember when the gorillaz got their own version
but at that time dated or not , there wasn’t anything close to being able to compete with mpcs/and sp’s… one of the reasons why koala is so popular today
yessir
My hot take is that the Zoom Sampletrak, which came out after the 202 but before the 303, was better than the SP.
lol but the 303 does ‘look’ better
I love this thread for all the lovely things I learn about gear that’s NOT an SP404mk2
Animoog was around, with a few other synths. Nanostudio definitely was, there was a few things. I’m sure it wasn’t all done inside the Ipad but the audio tracked to an recorder/MPC to be sliced and rearranged.
The was no iPad 13 years ago.
iPad released in 2011.
but Madlib was from the future because from 2010 he was using it to do all his beats, including ‘No more parties in LA’ which was recorded in 2010, released in 2016
nanostudio was really good for sample based music at the time. Just no timestretch but otherwise great
Completely agree! The sampletrak also sounds amazing, and less gimmicky than the sp.
I think the main problem with the sampletrak is noone famous used it… It might become very popular in the future after you become a legend!
Agree. Never quite understand why I sold mine
May as well rock an OP-1. 12 sec. of sample time, per bank, and the filters / compressor on the unit deliver a sick crunch.
My recollection is that it stunk for sample-based music. You couldn’t import samples w/o a computer, except for mic. in. And no chopping, or any other manipulation. You couldn’t even edit start & end points. Basically a rompler unit.
I modified an SLR camera bag. Perfect 404 bag.
I made the sample length calculation as a little tool for myself and thought maybe others like me can have use of it. Save it to your phones homescreen to convert it to a webapp.
