I successfully sequenced mine from a variety of external devices including my DT, it worked great! I’m also somebody who rarely bothers with program changes though.

Good that program changes from DT to SH-4D seem to work, at least to switching sounds. Has anyone ever tried “sound locking”? Does the SH4D react fast enough for this use case?

Seems okay to me

Somehow the SH-4D doesn’t seem to recognize note-off events coming from my DT.

When I play the SH-4D with the DT’s step buttons, the corresponding note LED at the SH-4HD stays on after I release a step button.

If I play the SH-4D with my Keystep 37, the LED goes off as soon as I release a key. So I think everything is fine regarding the Roland synth.

Of course I checked all the MIDI settings of my DT, all seems to be correct. Any ideas what’s wrong here?

EDIT:

However, I have opened a ticket with Elektron Support. I don’t want to have to deal with such basic MIDI incompatibilities in 2024 .

2ND EDIT:

I checked both MIDI sources with a MIDI monitor:

  • DT sends a Note ON event with Velocity = 0 as Note Off
  • Keystep sends a Note OFF with Velocity = 64 as Note Off

If I remember correctly, Note On with Velocity = 0 is valid for Note Off. Now I really don’t know who is the bad guy, Roland or Elektron?

3ND EDIT:

I was able to fix the problem temporarily: I still had a Retrokits RK-002 Smart MIDI Cable in the drawer. I actually found a ready-made script on the Retrokits website that converts the events into a “real” Note Off events. Works well so far.

It’s absolutely nonsense that you have to use an expensive cable with a built-in microcontroller to get two popular devices to communicate via MIDI.

I can’t get the motion recording to work anymore. I set the Motion sw to on in the Pattern settings but it won’t record the knob movements. I also tried setting Motion sw off because Loopop said it’s a bug but it’s not helping. Anybody had that problem before?

No, works fine here with it switched to ON

Thanks for checking! I know it worked at some point but now it’s not anymore. Very strange. I found a reddit thread with 2 people having the same issue but no solution so far.

That’s strange it would just stop working. Has there been a firmware update recently?

No.

I found the solution. If i change the midi channels of the parts it won’t play the motion recording anymore. Changed part 1 back to midi channel 1 and now i t works again. Still a bit strange but at least it’s working again.

I highlighted this problem to Roland Support a while back and they said they would look into it.

Soundwise a Note On with velocity data of zero does work correctly (and is what Roland use themselves to terminate sounds) it is just that the corresponding button light does not extinguish.

That’s weird, but good to know!

If you change the midi channel first and then record the motion does that work? (Can’t check mine as I’m away)

No it doesn’t.

Well this explains why I could never get motion recording to work reliably when I had one!

I know. It’s just a cosmetic problem, but it’s confusing. However, I also reported it to Roland support. They were able to understand the issue and forwarded it to the developers. At least that’s what they said

Sorry if this has been covered in this thread, but I finally was able to remove the ground noise from my SH-4D! This is what I used…

Lately I’ve been controlling it with the DT and running the audio through the DT, then I run the mix in to my SP404 MK2. Any use of compression just brought the noise to the front. This fixed it.

Hello everyone. I just purchased a SH-4D.
Has anyone found midi clock start synchronization issues when play back the sequencer from the beginning holding down pattern+start?
here it happens when sh-4d sends clock to mpk mini plus sequencer, but when I use mc-101 which sends clock to mpk mini plus everything is synchronized. I think it depends by the sh-4d.

Hello all,

Just a question in case somebody is/was in the same case.

I’m an happy new owner of the S-1 (which I love). I plan to buy a SH-4d soon to replace my Verselab (which I hate).

Apart having a extra synth (the S-1) on top of the 4 synth tracks of the SH-4d, is it relevant to keep the S-1 ?
Is the SH-101 synth model of the SH-4d the same or close than/to the S-1 one ?
Is there any extra features on the S-1 versus SH-4d I didn’t identifiy yet ?

Thank you

Does anyone think Roland might ever update this or do you think they’ve moved on to whatever silly business they went on to next?

There’s still so much that’s nearly there but just sort of flaccid and still some downright wrong design choices regarding the patch/pattern architecture.

I sort of thought that once it was a little more available we might see something but I’m sort of starting to doubt it now.

You never can tell with Roland.
They are like the person from work who calls in sick all the time.
