Roland Sh-4d

How well does the Sh-4d play with external sequencers? I have read some disappointments about how it saves sounds in relation to its own internal sequencer but what about as a 4 part multitimbral synth sequenced with something like the Digitakt? Does it respond to program changes?

Not well if you want to do pattern changes from Elektron sequencers - a problem shared with other Roland gear (see for instant the recent posts in TR-6S.

That’s unfortunate. What about patch changes? In other words, bypassing the Sh-4d’s sequencer altogether and just using it as a module?

I tried that some time ago (from an OT) and that works as expected IIRC.

has anyone had any experience using the sh-4d as a sound module sequenced by the midi tracks of one of their elektron boxes? i understand you can send the 4d program change messages, but are you able to freely access any preset on the 4d with PC message without having to fuss around setting anything up on the 4d? I bought the MC-101 hoping I could use it like that, but it turned out I needed to set up blank patterns/kits on the MC-101 within a project in order to send it PC messages that would change the sounds.

I need to do some reading about PC messages, whenever I’ve tried it with my octatrack it’s worked but then I’ve ended up getting the SH4D into a weird stuck state where one of the channels comes up with a [not available] message or something similar and you can’t edit anything where I’ve needed to save and reboot the SH4D.

It’s 100% user error and I’m probably accidentally sending a mad signal to it by moving the wrong knob or something.

I use it with Oxi One, only thing that sucks is having 4 tracks to work with on the One. Otherwise it’s pretty fun to use

Is there a way to turn quantize off when I live record?

no

Oh wow, that’s a little ridiculous. Hmmm, I think that’s the deal breaker for me :frowning:

There doesn’t seem to be micro-timing either? Am I missing it?

No :frowning:

Roland must have serious production issues as the unit is not avail almost anywhere I tried ( thomann is few MONTHS :slightly_frowning_face: and so on…

Patchwerks in seattle has some in stock, they do online sales

Thanks but with import duties will cost me a lot more… I think I can manage October…

That was the case with the SP404MKII, and several times with the TR8S as well, so much that some people claimed it was discontinued. be patient and don’t overpay just because it’s not in stock, it will be eventually.

That is what I will do… :innocent:

Anyone feel the same that the ’ RANDOMIZE STEPS’ is pretty useless as generator?

Really dig this! Curious to know how much of the lo-fi, fuzzy vibe is a result of plugins/Reaper and how much of that could be achieved just using the SH-4D (if one was willing to put up with a stereo mix rather than individual tracks)

I refuse to buy anymore Roland gear until they come with a new analog poly synth.
