Roland Sh-4d

I gave it a go today. Just dipping my toes in. I’m excited to see what it can do.

gave it a shot this morning. is there a way to get infinite sustain on the notes? i need to check the manual but it seems as if the hold button only works with the arp. but either way i made this drone with the sh-3d engine. i did use the arp to sustain, but its not really sustaining its just on a slow 1/4 note arp. but that added a fun layer to it. ran it through the 404 for extra layers of effects. definitely too much delay going on. i wonder if you can hold the arp on multiple parts at the same time, will have to try

I also think this is how it works, but if you want to use the sequencer, you can make a continuous drone note by setting the last step to tie.

This video will explain how to drone the SH4D

Yooo!! This is nice! Like ‘Sunno))) and Lustmord’ nice!!

Definitely not ‘too much’… but in my opinion, it could morph to straight up ‘Merzbow’ level and that would be just fine!!

This seems to be perfectly imperfect.

Just bought one thanks for all the good tunes and discussion.

Im going to sequence it with Hapax and I guess send it into the SP404 I just got if im feeling like the couch is the place to find inspiration.

Rolands messed up manuals and menus and overall workflow have me convinced they’ve sucked me in by just being complicated/weird/obstinate? Thinking out loud  :grinning:

the answer is no, pattern change always happens 1 pattern late with the digis. after 2 years and no update from Roland i sold it. i didn’t want to sequence from the digi wich is totaly doable.

Same issue I had with my Pyramid then. But today I would sync it from the Digis though, so it’s viable then. Thanks for letting me know!

It’s a bit embarrassing, but the website I used to host the file has been shut down and I didn’t keep a backup. Does anyone happen to have a copy of the SH-4d-pattern-template.zip they can post here?

How quickly can probability be added to each step on the SH-4d? I find it to be a pretty slow process on the Aira Compact range.

really fast, from the sequencer view you hold a step, press the > arrow to move the page over and then you use the left knob for probability. once you are on this page, you can just press the other steps to access their probability setting immediately

Ok enjoying the sh-4d, main reasons at this early stage are synth sound versatility, multitimbral polyphony, SO MUCH EQ options, easy enough to use.

All 5 parts work exactly like they should with HAPAX. So its a crazy deep setup combining those 2. Having access to 26 instruments on the drum kit is crazy to me.

Things i dont love so far: Main filter is boring and i dont love the reverbs or delays. No sequencer unquantize/microtiming should be illegal!

Is it just me or do the main outs sound better than the headphone outs? Ive got pretty flat headphones and monitors( in a treated room). But it seems it sounds “better” using main outs into sp404 and then listening to sp404 headphone out. And sounds better through my audio interface, same headphones and monitors. Or am i making things up again!?

Anyone own/compared sound quality etc vs korg wavestate?

Does PC work well from the Hapax? As in changing kits or patterns. I’m interested in getting it but worried that PC from Digitakt 2 won’t work as well as I hope for it to.

PC of instruments works really well from Hapax and should work just as well from DT2. Only drawback with regards to DT2… you have to get bank change MSB/LSB and PC numbers right and the Hapax can at least provide those via an instrument definition. Beware! If you happen to send a non-valid combination of MSB/LSB/PC the corresponding part will become unaccessible until you send a valid one again.
Changing instruments, rhythm kits and patterns will cut trails. Changing instruments, rhythm kits without changing the pattern will keep pattern fx trails. You can change all parts externally without having to care about patterns.

After my not so happy experience trying to get synced pattern changes via Midi to work on the TR-8s I didn’t even bother with the SH-4d and consequently I don’t use the internal sequencer at all. The only reason for me to care about patterns is the pattern fx. They’re not controllable via Midi. You still need a full track on Hapax or DT just to send pattern PCs. I’m still unsure how to go about this. Just leaving the patterns alone, simplifies the cumbersome saving process quite a bit. The fx are quite nice though, so I don’t want to ignore them completely either.

Thanks for this! Would you say it’s easier to change kits through midi than changing patterns through midi when sequenced externally?
