No there isn’t, the problem exists the exact same way on the GAIA which share the same synth engine. You can’t really fix aliasing since it’s driven by how the DSP in these devices deal with numbers.
That’s a sweet gift.
Embrace it, use it, create with it!

I frickin love my SH-32. The look, the sound, its legit knob-per-function interface. It’s all great!
It’s easily the most characherful VA I own. It’s the (last?) great example of Roland’s experimentation with “Wave Acceleration” synthesis, which is their way of saying there aren’t oscillators in there. It’s actually playing back delicately tuned multisamples for its waveforms. This not only gives it a “sound”, but was also a good excuse for Roland to throw a full set of 808 and 909 samples on there as well.
These combined with what I think is still the most impressive arp I’ve seen in hardware make the SH-32 a techno beast. This was the only way I used it for a while. But then the Soundsauca pack linked above really opened my eyes to its possibilities as a dusty ambient instrument (that pack is a must-have for any SH-32 owner, IMHO). A surprisingly flexible little box.
The fader, when swept slowly with the knob, does have audible stepping. When sweeping slow like that though, better just to do it with an LFO, and that does not step. Or embrace it as part of the sound! That works, too.
Anyway, very underrated piece of gear, IMHO. A unique arp, unique sound, and extremely tweekable interface that always takes me someplace new.
I’ve owned it twice and couldn’t get on with the interface. I loved the look and knob per function but I didn’t really explore it much. Damnit, your post is selling me yet again…
Don’t let me GAS you. It’s a great synth and does cool things that I find inspiring. But none of it is really obvious. Its one of those Rolands that you have to mine for greatness.
And, I mean, life’s short and there’s just so much gear out there. Deciding not to toil in a mine is a valid and intelligent decision. Especially if you have one or two other mines you’re already toiling in on the regular
Oh man, not to derail the topic, but those 90’s GSX-R’s were so beautiful. I had a Honda VFR 750 which was arguably a better bike, but didn’t look nearly as nice as the Suzuki. It’s like the 300ZX of the 90’s car world.
I had one of these for a hot minute, then traded up to a new TL1000S…
Oh, and I had an SH-32 as well. It rode sidecar to many a groovebox for many years.
For the record, the SH-32 doesn’t look anything like a TL1000S.

Cheers!
no please derail the topic I also would like to ogle at 90’s sport bikes
This was the fastest and most successful gas inducing and extinguishing couple of posts ever
Heya peeps… I have a Roland SH32 which I adore, and am trying to master its cryptic and confusing workflow. On this promo video on youtube https://youtu.be/3s_rIMJCXFY?t=125, I can see the demo is using the Rhythm section with quite some complexity. When I use an external sequencer with the unit, it will only allow me to play one drum/ rhythm sound at a time. For example if I program a kick and a Clap at the same time, only the clap will play.
Does anyone have any ideas how to do what the guy in the video is doing? I was thinking maybe he was “cheating” with the drums by making one of the normal synth sections sound like a drum perhaps?
Its my first post here! Hope its all in the right forum etc. Sorry if not and feel free to delete.
Hey there I have been able to set mine up to have 4 channels triggered by any midi channel. I can trigger the drums, and 3 synth channels. Can operate any of the drum kit elements at the same time. I don’t remember how to set it up at the moment, but I do make youtube tutorials and eventually will get to covering the SH32 I own.
It really is cool, and possible to trigger the way you might want!
Wooow! I knew it was possible! Im still trying every day. If you do make a youtube tutorial I will be eternally grateful - on youtube there is very little on the SH 32. I have no idea why this machine is so unpopular! (oh, wait… the workflow!)
I also messaged roland directly and they said the following…
The drum part itself is effectively monophonic, so if multiple drum notes arrive on the same part or MIDI channel, the unit will prioritise one sound, usually the highest note, which is why the cymbal cuts the kick or snare.
In the video you linked, the user is working in Performance mode and spreading different drum sounds across multiple Parts, each on its own MIDI channel. That’s the only way to get kick and snare playing at the same time on the SH‑32.
So the workaround is to stay in Performance mode, assign different drum sounds to different Parts, and sequence each one on a separate MIDI channel.
… its great to recieve this level of support for such an old tool - I followed up to see if they had any idea to set that up. Will update here if they get back!
I do not think that’s correct. I will have to take out my sh32 but I don’t think the rhythm track is monophonic, I remember using it like any drum machine. If I’m wrong I will be very surprised. I will try tonight hopefully and report back!
Edit sorry didn’t get a chance to test I’ll make note to myself to do this tonight
Ok I am glad to confirm I am triggering all 3 synth tracks midi 1-3, and the drums are triggering polyphonically!
(Reference: see on deluge bottom 3 rows are all triggering polyphonically on midi ch 4, from different notes)
I haven’t used it deeply in a while but if you need me to load up any settings let me know what you’d like to know
Oh wow! thats amazing that it works… thank you so much for looking. Was there any internal settings on the SH32 you needed to load up? I am currently using a midi cable out of logic pro… but I also want to get it set up on my Keystep pro (once it arrives).
Well on my end I already had it set up, but no idea what specific settings to even look for. If you wanted me to look at some setting let me know. I just literally plugged in midi to my deluge , sent from 4 midi channels.
@RonCavagnaro I am happy to report that I made some progress with my keystep pro… its a new toy so I need to get used to it… the main win is that if I press the different channels within the Keystep, it does trigger different sounds which is more than I could do with Logic pro via USB midi. My issue however is that I am still unable to play multiple sounds simultainiously. I also cannot seem to trigger the rhythm section (when I press a key, it triggers a pre defined/ factory built drum pattern for some reason). Im also wondering how I select the sound of a given part?
If I’m wrong forgive me I am not in the studio to check, but I think you have the arpeggiator enabled.
See where it says arpeggiator it has a light on the right hand side lit “on”. Try to turn that off, see if that works.
As far as I recall, to change partsjust make sure preview is enabled (yours is according to the photo), and press anywhere from 1-4/r. The R means rhythm so that should be the drum track.
If you still have issues let me know I can try to help!
Aah yes, I can change the actual sounds between 1-3 (for some reason I cannot select the drum sound - it just plays the loop/ demo with each key)… the question I have is how to change the allocated sound in a given slot - i.e. how would I change the sound in slot 1, but keep the sound already in slot 2?
