I don’t really have an issue with this, this is far less noxious than using ai to generate a full track or a full synth part. It’s just another synthesis method at the level where you’re using it to modify the sound you’re playing or sequencing. Nobody really shits on people for using analog emulation vsts or presets and this isn’t that fundamentally different. The analog stuff isn’t going away for people who prefer it and realistically the AI stuff is going to eventually get to a point where it sounds almost identical in a mix, just like the vsts and va synths do.
That said, your example sounds really boring musically and it will be more interesting when people start abusing it to make newer sounds.
I agree with all the things you just said. It was my main point, that for the unimaginative this is just another version of emulation/modeling and for those who are creative and willing to get into it deeply this will be something really interesting.
I have a strange feeling of déjà vu, because this plugin is similar to one of the IRCAM free applications that I discovered this year and posted somewhere here.

That’s my view too, it looks like they approached the plugin manufacturer and asked if they would be interested in collaborating. One of the Roland guys mentions in the video (or rather Nick Batt observes) that the circuit board with the knobs is backed by a Raspberry Pi pico (a mini microcontroller) that just converts the encoder data to MIDI and then feeds it to the main raspberry pi in the base of the pedal.
I do think this use of AI is fundamentally different from things like generative ‘tools’ such as Suno, which I consider to be absolute cancer. I’d appreciate if we could focus on this specific application of technology rather than griping about AI in general, which is like saying all electronic music just somebody pressing play and doing nothing.
Agreed with this. All that generative AI crap is limiting people’s expectation of what machine learning technologies can really be about, and how they can definitely be creative and personal (especially when using a small dataset)
+1 for mentionning Ircam RAVE as well as an open-source alternative on this concept. I already know some people who are running it on their own DIY Raspberry PI devices
