Keep in mind that this is a creative midi player first, and synth second. The idea is to do the opposite of what you’re suggesting: using this as the midi controller to play chords and phrases on another synth.
T8 also, hooked up to a Pulsar23 as the sequencer…
For example
Great little pocket controllers
Is it possible to send the audio and/or midi over USB C to a 404 mkII? I couldn’t get it going that way. I have a J-6
I don’t have one of the new mini Roland’s, but I do have to new Sp404. My understanding is the new Roland’s act as an audio interface, so…
That’s not going to work. Basically they are each an audio interface. So you are trying to get them to communicate without any type of host (PC, tablet, phone, etc).
Okay thanks. I guess aira link doesn’t work in that way either.
Had to read this twice—assuming you were talking about the other kind of distortion, and thought, wow, if Jeanne’s surprised by the distortion I should check this thing out!
Yeah, I’m usually really impressed how his videos transcend the “bad gear” schtick, but this one didn’t do so as much.
Haha, well it was really just the few seconds of the kick! And a general rant about reviewers afraid of changing sound parameters. AudioPilz doesn’t do it either, most of the time!
The T-8’s overdrive might be my favorite thing about it, honestly. The snare, kick, and tom from this all have varying amounts of OD and gain applied, and that kick is just nasty.
It isn’t possible to connect these by USB… I have both though and the J-6 does sound pretty nice through the SP’s Juno Chorus effect!
I’ve been thinking… the T-8 has a lot of the same functionality as the TR-06, just in a smaller and more playable box:
multiple sounds for each drum, lots of FX including great distortion,
My wishlist for the J-6:
-Real-time note input recording! I know you can set the steps to 1/16 for a sort of pseudo real time record mode but it’s kind of fiddly and not the same. Imagine if you could set each step to 1 or 2 bars, then just play in notes and chords and have it record whatever you play, in whatever rhythm you play it
-the metronome needs to be audible! You basically always have to have the J-6 connected to a drum machine of some kind, because if you are trying to sequence longer patterns using some of the more complex syncopated rhythms, it quickly becomes very difficult to tell where you are rhythmically without at least a metronome sound
Roland T-8 - my 2 Cents.
Well, the combination of a TR-sounds and a TB 303 certainly makes a lot of sense, not only for those Old-School-Rebirth 338 aficionados. And this little box is able to deliver strong bass sounds and surprisingly accurate 303 emulations.
Drums
The TR emulations sound ok and features like Tuning, Overdrive etc. are highly appreciated. But the fact that you can’t link sound settings to a pattern or save entire Kits is really annoying. That wouldn’t be as bad if the knobs would at least have a decent size or if there weren’t lots of features hidden in menus and submenus.
303
Like with their not-so-great TB-03, Roland is missing out on some essential 303 characteristics such as the BA662 noise at the beginning of a note and has a somewhat overall sterile character compared to other 303 clones. But we’re talking about nuances that will be relevant only to the real 303-nerds. Nevertheless, it’s a great addition.
Conclusion
If you can live with that, excellent: As I’ve said - the T-8 sounds offers a great sound in a pocket-sized box with a very small footprint. But be sure to put some velcro in your shopping basket: The lightweight box moves at the slightest breeze.
I can’t help being disappointed that there’s still no “Rebirth in a box” (nostalgia here)
It’s not the point of the T-8, but imagine if it had 2 303 lines.
As people may or may not remember I was all excited by the idea of running synth loops through my E4, with the main thought being that I’d mangle them with the scatter and it would be awesome. I’ve finally spent some real quality time doing exactly that with a Dysmetria running into the E4, both of which are clocked by a Digitakt. If I’m being honest (I do try!) the results have been pretty weak. I’m going to keep at it for another few days and if I unlock any incredible secrets I will report further.
That sounds like a task for the SP404mk2. Running the J-6 through the SP’s Juno Chorus is pretty sweet.
Nice to hear an example of overdrived sounds from T8, as I couldn’t find any on the web.
Just ordered it, should arrive next week, and first thing I ll try is pushing up max overdrive on all tracks to see if it can fit my wishes of destruction.
Well, sure it’s not the best box for it, but anyway, if it can be a portable inspiration for distorted music, that would be a great bonus to me!
But although it also has a Mix In, the FX can’t be applied to it.
On the other hand, having ability to use rechargeable AA batteries in the MC-101/TR-6S, means I can keep a spare set, in case I need them.
Ok, so I got an E-4 for my birthday. Has anyone figured out how to get it to work with the OT?
