Crap news.
This is probably my favourite Shellac track, still remember Bob and him pouring bottles of water over Todd during it at a gig in Camden

What a loss. RIP. And just before Shellac’s new album is to be released next week.

What a sad loss! He was one of my favorites artists.
I love Big Black and Shellac, I love his guitar playing, his voice, his sound, his taste.
No words, I’m going to cry… one of the best is gone.

obviously In Utero, but also the intro to this was life-changing for me from a recording/drumming perspective. can’t believe he’s gone

also +1 to the people talking about his advocacy work and general maturation

^ one of the best episodes of show us your junk ever.

What a loss. I was lucky enough to see Shellac twice, 2015 and 2022, and both times they absolutely melted my brain. What a sick band.

His commitment to capturing a band “as if they were playing the greatest set you’ve ever seen at your local dive bar” and forgoing nearly all “production shine-up” techniques and keeping it raw was fucking punk and inspired myself and so many other producer/engineers to experiment along those same paths.

rest in power to an absolute legend.

Amazing album. Maybe he and Jason are playing poker somewhere in the ether.

Out of all the stuff he’s done I have a huge soft spot for this record:

I liked their first two albums well enough - good songs, but fairly standard shiny Britpop production - slightly fey “literate” guitar pop. Brought in Albini for the third one and reemerged as snarling rock monsters. It came out at the height of Blur/Oasis mania and pretty much spat in the face of the zeitgeist - perfect marriage of contrarianism between band and engineer - taking out the garbage at the Columbia Hotel.

RIP, gone far too soon.

Man I don’t get it. Steve looks healthy, youthful, and sharp-minded in that interview. And yet, Kieth Richards looks like Faces of Meth had a love child with the Crypt Keeper and nods off during interviews and he’s still getting high and doing the Weekend at Bernie’s touring gig.

I’m gutted. He was an absolute legend.

fucking shattered-glass guitar, raw, tight-ass drums, intense, dark, but wickedly funny lyrics and truly original artistic recording and vision. albini is the man. rip

Didn’t this guy write some horrible child abuse shit in his Big Black tour diary? And he was buds with that Sotos pedo, too?
