Ricky Tinez video with the rare Monomachine Mk 2

And here I thought the Digitone Keys was a strange format. Didn’t know this was a thing!

It’s intended that one person can play the keys whilst another tweaks the module. Pretty smart if you ask me.

So what’s on this one that isn’t on the regular mono keys?

great video (as always from Ricky)
never play with a mono machine, but I found it fascinating to see the influence this had on the Octatrack… Machines/Neighbour tracks.

I was also thinking, most what Ricky was enthusiastic about, regarding feedback, neighbour machines fx, envelopes after reverb… are all possible on the OT - no?
(of course the OT doesn’t a synth engine, but that didn’t seem to get much of a shout out  )

Yes. And single cycle waves sound great through OTs filter and also the comb filter works great for synthesis.

How do you know this was the intention?
Btw, the design is actually great if you have gear behind it.
For the lack of pic with MM, here’s the DNK.

It’s mentioned in the first couple of minutes of the video: this is a MkII unit in an SFX-6 (MkI) shell. Therefore there are extra synth machines. A full list of the differences is given in the MM’s manual.

Ah, cool, thx! Also thanks for the reminder on that video…wanted to watch it, but somehow forgot…

Its about time he changed his coffee filter in the intro.

It was cool to see such a rare unit but he could’ve done all that with a regular MKII (and potentially a KeyStep for those rare moments he actually touched the keyboard). What about the joystick tho??? Would it work with the MKII-only synth engines or would the software not recognise it?

It’s probaply similar to the Analog Keys’ joystick. Up is mod wheel (CC01), left/right is pitchbend, down is breath control (CC02) and a quick glance at the MM pdf manual confirms it , so any midi controller that can output pitchbend + mod wheel and breath control works.

Cool. I meant would MKII-only synth parameters appear in the mapping screen for the joystick? Like how amp and filter destinations are showing up in your screenshot.

Joystick support is present in the firmware on mk2 desktop units, if I remember correctly. So I assume it’s got full support.

Ah! Awesome. Tinez should’ve waggled it

Just a few years ago these keyboard versions were still hard to get rid of. It’s crazy now, you don’t see silver boxes much and if u do prices are ridiculous. Sad really, almost bought both a couple times but never pulled the trigger, would have been great deals by today’s standards.

You get a reminder that you could have bought the keyboard edition every time you edit a kit.

Yep. Can relate. I passed on a MMkb for silly cheap a few years ago. Decided it wasn’t the mk2 internals and thought not worth the hassle, then proceeded to sell one of my monomachines just before covid for $2.5k less than what they are now going for every day of the week on Reverb. Amazing change of perception on something that was considered passé once the analog revo gained steam.

As for the video… nice vibes, good sounds, but superficial depth. So much was passed over or never mentioned. Guess that’s a reflection on the monomachine though. Not something you can demo in 20 mins.

I tried the mono machine a bunch of times and each time it just made me laugh. I definitely get that some deeper tweaking is needed to find the machines sweet spots. some nice beats in Rickys video, too.

The Machinedrum on the other hand always seemed to instantly sound more meaty, would go a Machinedrum first before the mono.

Ah, wish we lived in the universe where Elektron had rereleased these puppies already. Cross our fingers for a 20th anniversary version? Couple more years? lol

Desire is so interconnected with human nature, and with (un)happiness. And we love/hate scarcity, don’t we?

Here’s a demo of something released in early 2000s and was available for more than a decade, discountinued 5years ago.

Everything -no exception- in this video could be done with any and every single MNM.
The OT does share a lot of these features, except amp ADSR on neighbor machine - huge downgrade, at the time criticizing it was against the current hype train.
MNM FX was constantly being mocked online.
Now there’s this catch phrase on how MNM is like modular.

Imagine a time 5 years after the OT is discontinued. What will people say about it’s sound quality? How much will we love it’s unavailability?

Me personally, I would love/hate to know, but I might just get off the internet, if I can.
