Reverb plugin for simulation of realistic spaces

Hey!

Hopefully the title is self explanatory- essentially, i have a job coming up (dialogue edit, mix etc) of an audio drama/expanded audiobook that requires some low level but very specific sound design, and which mainly rests on the use of very convincing reverbs- ie simulation of real spaces. I had hoped in vain the stock reverb in Reaper might be workable, as the Pro Tools one was when i was a PT user, but it really isnt. Looking for reccomendations, i dont mind paying but not too much.

for dialog and simulation of various room IR’s are great. AFAIK most audio post in film is done with IRs.

maybe you already have some ir capable reverb. I am shure there are a lot of good IRs for free on the web.

i you want an algo and shape your rooms check out valhallas ROOM and fab filters PRO-R2. TSAR-1 from softube also sounds great and is very easy to dial in.

The stock air reverb plugin for MPC is pretty good for this, it’s just not too great for music (although with an amp sim it does sound good when processing electric guitar).

Would probably be free or cheap to try it out so you could make your own determination.

Seems like there are some interesting options here.
Especially the SIR1 if you happen to have a system that can run a 32bit VST host…

these are plugins for VR, but extremely useful for placing dialog in correct space, but overall yeah, convolution reverbs is what you are looking for, there is a basic free melda one ( MConvolutionEZ | MeldaProduction ).

Yeah they mention it as number two on the list above, and that its pretty bare bones, doesn’t have controls like attack and decay, which I think is kind of necessary? ;D

Their top recommendation is Convology XT by Impulse Record, that seems pretty full featured. Only limit is the included 70 IRs.

cheers guys- some good suggestions here, really appreciated

I don’t use this one personally but I’ve heard good things about it for the application you are describing.

This one is also used my a lot of professionals, particularly for orchestral scoring, but won’t have the variety offered by altiverb.

My favorite reverb is LiquidSonics Seventh Heaven, but it’s probably not what you are looking for this application. Amazing reverb though.

If you use Live Suite, the SPAT devices are great

I just remembered that Waves have a new free bundle that includes an IR Reverb (even updates will be free)

https://www.waves.com/bundles/free-plugin-pack

They even offer a compatible 4.8GB library of IRs for free

I do use Live Suite so yes this is a consideration, tho id hoped to keep it all within Reaper if possible for practical reasons

For Repear etc there’s the SPAT devices from FLUX but those are eyewateringly expensive

bloody hell yeh theres no way im paying that

Haha not following. It’s free, or are you being ironic?

As already suggested, may as well give the DearVR plugs a try as they’re now free (Sennheiser bought the company last year).

oops sorry that was meant to be a reply to @garf . not sure how i cocked that up

Lots of people use convolution in post, altiverb is the most common because of it’s library of IR’s not because it’s better. Older mixers who came up using 480’s and TC 6000’s often use plugin versions of those. Valhalla Room is a good choice for a nice algorithmic reverb for less.

If you solo stems for a film on cans I doubt you’ll think any reverb anyone uses sounds all that realistic out of context.

I’d opt for convolution reverb for realistic spaces.

You don’t need to spend anything, there’s some good free IR plugins out there.

I use lives stock plugin.
