Hey! I tried something the other day but couldn’t get it to work, and was wondering if it was possible on the Digitakt at all!
What I wanted was to compress a drum break, but not my whole track. I know that the Digitakt compressor works on the master out only, so I figured what if I just play the break with the compressor on, resample that and then turn the compressor off again.
However, when I tried it, it seemed that somehow the compressor gets bypassed during resampling! My original loop and the resampled one were identical.
Is my conclusion correct? And is there a way to change this behavior?
I just tried and it didn’t work for me either but currently trying to determine if this is actually the effect of normalization which DT displays on sampling / resampling or if sampling from main comes out of the mixer and does not pass through the compressor.
Unfortunately, the audio routing flowchart from the manual does not specify where resampling occurs, it just shows main out is always after the compressor, and internally it refers to what you’re sampling as “main” so it’s definitely not written in a straightforward manner.
I’ll try a couple of things and see if I can figure it out. An option for a workaround if this doesn’t pan out (a workaround which kinda sucks) would be to run cables from the physical outs to the ins but you’d had to configure it to avoid a feedback loop.
Anyways, I’m not hearing compression on resampling but I’m also hearing a difference in level which is making it difficult to confirm if the compressor is completely bypassed or if it’s just the result of the forced normalization. If I figure it out I’ll let you know.
Ok so I used the specific track as the source as opposed to the main and sampled both with and without the compressor. I’m observing that the waveform (as displayed in the sampling window) is visibly different between no compressor and the compressor slammed, but I’m hearing more of the level change than the effect of the compressor itself.
Not sure but starting to look like internal resampling with compression doesn’t work too well unless there’s maybe a trick which I’m not aware of. Or could be human error on my part as well.
Hm, yeah, trying it now I can see a small difference in the wave forms on my machine too. However, it most definitely does not sound the same before and after turning the compressor on and off, which is what I would have expected!
It does but the percieved loudness is fckd by the normalization , as you might notice in my video the compressor can cause loud transient spikes triggering the normalization algo way above the average level. This is causing a quieter overal resample as a result. Now i know i used extreme settings for this check but increasing dynamic peaks after the compressor isn’t what you would expect. Gonna try later but without gain compensation to the max.
My guess for now is the workaround has something to do with affecting the auto normalization one way or the other. Perhaps bringing the amp or track volume of the source track down and the treshold likewise and gentle on the gain compensation in the compressor will end up with a louder resample samplefile. Gonna try that later
