This Sunday’s Live and Indirect session comes from Mat Colegate (Teeth Of The Sea / Lord Nuneaton Savage / Raised By Wolves / Medicine and Duty) in his M.L Deathman / Mighty Lord Deathman guise:

All the music presented here as The Day It Rained Forever was improvised and recorded into a single room mic in one day - the 24th of November, 2025 - with another day set aside for editing, mixing, sequencing and minimal overdubbing. The rain sounds were recorded by holding a digital recorder out of the studio window and capturing the afternoon’s ferocious weather. It’s hoped that the combination of music and ambience gives the listener an impression of what it was like to be in the studio; drinking tea and smoking, staring out into the rain, stroking the cats and playing without a thought for anyone who might be listening.

Inspired by the Jamuary tradition of spontaneous composition held in the first month of each year, several artists have been invited to create brief compositions for a collective Live and Indirect session at short notice.

Various Artists: Live and Indirections Volume 1 goes out at 20:00 UTC on Sunday 5 January 2025 at Repeater Radio, and the Discord lounge will be open to all as usual.

Hákarl 'is the solo project of Kev Nickells (Brighton, UK). Recently I’ve been poring over recordings and literature about maqqamat - classical Arabic musical systems that very roughly correspond to Western modes; maqqamat is the plural, maqqam the singular. This piece is an improvisation for fretless guitar. I’m playing about with a few Ajnas [singular: jins] which are (again roughly) scale fragments that make up a maqqam. Arabic listeners may want to brace themselves for some unorthodox approaches; I’m definitely not trying to be authentic. Except in that valley girl sense of being, like, authentically me yeah?

Drift of Signifieds ‘have dredged up something old, and borrowed the piece concerned from themselves.’

nulmatica

nulmatica is a duo consisting of multi-instrumentalists Jim Whisenant and Ed Blomquist, who have been making music together since about 1992. They are founding members of Rivers and Skies, The Free Range Experiment, and Underwater Airport.
Unlike much of their music which is freely improvised in real time, the nulmatica project is centered around sculpting tracks in Ableton Live, using overdubbing and multitracking.
These two tracks, Xynthaline and SuperStarGlide2, are unreleased and date back to 2014. They are anticipated to be released in 2025…
Jim and Ed’s various projects are on Bandcamp and the major streaming services.
Jim also makes solo music as Antennes Obliques and Ed does under his own name.

Live and Indirections Volume 3 this weekend will have contributions from Hornorkesteret (Norwegians who make sound from elk and reindeer antlers), Øy (a Norwegian tap-dancing electronic improv duo featuring Kristoffer Lislegaard and Janne Eraker), Ronny Wærnes (a noise artist from… erm, Norway), Ekoplekz with an exclusive session, the magnificent proggy spaciness of @Scot_Solida, and Drift of Signifieds x Autotistika with the first part of a new collaboration.

The Live and Indirect Sessions will be moving to a new home, along with the rest of the radio station, in June 2025.

Confused about the date… Sunday the 28th? Did I jump a time track?

For anyone interested, there’s a lot of the big Moog in my track. Almost all of the last seven minutes is the Moog, along with a little Rhodes and Clavioline and some tape collage. The first bit is Roland TR-77, Polymoog, Harmonium, DIY noisebox, and VCS3.
