48K, 24bit is the sweet spot.
For musical applications, under normal conditions, 96K exceeds human perception by an order of magnitude, and serves only to create massive files and tax your hardware.
To which end, I’ve never in my life had to choose a buffer size higher than 256, even when using hopelessly under-spec’d computers. So, I’m going to back the suggestions above to try a buffer size at-or-below 128, and believe the speculation and reports about the newer Apple silicon chips choking on larger buffer sizes for indeterminate reasons.
Cheers!
